Hi all
« on: December 19, 2010, 06:33:57 AM »
Hi everyone.

I'm a brand new DM with a brand new set of players.  We have been playing video games since we were kids and that's progressed to table tops (40k mostly but I'm also getting Mordheim going) and now we are pushing the bounds of our nerdiness with D&D 4e.  To begin with it's just me DMing with 2 players until we get the hang of things.  There are plenty of other people who are interested in trying it but it's just us 3 who are really keen.

None of us have ever done any RPing before but as I've always enjoyed the mechanics behind games and tend to be the one who organises things I am the DM and I have spent an amazing amount of time reading scenarios and GM tips.  So far we have only had 2 sessions with another in a couple of days and I have to give credit to slartibartfast as I'll be using his Danse Macabre adventure as the basis for that.

Yahooo!! Just let it loose. Many DMs try to hard and as a result don't let the game just happen and be fun. Expect and encourage the unexpected and embrace creativity and exaggerated, dramatic actions. The most memorable games I remember is that single shot that takes down the monster or the impossible last ditch effort that kills most of the baddies. Don't be a slave to the rules but use them for good, not evil. :)

Welcome to the site and I hope you find hours and hours of ideas to use! Then start adding your own!!

As another new member of the Citadel, I say Welcome. You will find no end of gaming ideas here. I'm still trying to figure out how to add all the cool ideas I've seen into my own fledgling campaign. (And yet, I can't seem to stop myself from reading submission after submission.)

Welcome also as a new gamer. I have always felt that video games can't compare to the kind of dynamic energy a group of gamers can generate. And while it has been some years since I've been able to get a good group together, I've never found anything to match the experience. I have quite a few memories of intense dramatic moments and levels of silliosity beyond comprehension.

Garm... That was Sumner's younger brother who released Skorne in the Gauntlet series. That's who I'm going to think of when I see your name, until you can establish yourself apart from him, that is.

I'm not sure how well a lot of our ideas will work with D&D 4e., being non-system specific and mainly geared towards a different style than the one, I feel, 4e D&D promotes. I am glad you found this site early in your role-playing life, as it is a marvelous resource, and I hope you come to love this place as so many of us have. Can't wait to see some more ideas popping up from you new guys.

Welcome to Garm, and MysticMoon.

Psh, as long as you're willing to do your homework you can change just about anything we have to suit 4e, though I'm sure there are a few that wouldn't work too well with it.

WELCOME TO THE CITADEL!  Hope you have a nice time of it, though that being said, when you do post, don't take any of our criticism personally and you'll do just fine. :D

Welcome, Garm!  I'm also a new DM and have found many invaluable resources on this site.  Our campaign is now into it's 3rd or 4th session and I'm finally starting to get the hang of it all.  Here are a few articles that I found particularly useful:

http://strolen.com/viewing/Ways_a_DM_Can_Stall_an_Adventure  (great if you need a few extra moments to think)
http://newbiedm.com/2008/11/22/newbiedm-tutorial-counters-tokens-or-pogs/  (Not a Strolen's article, but this is so good that I had to post it here.  Making ass-kicking tokens like these will save you tons on minis, and you don't need Photoshop if you download a free copy of GIMP )

I'm sure that you will find many more to help improve your game and enrich the experience for your players and for yourself.

Good luck, and have fun with the hobby!

Welcome to what I hope you will come to call home, this place has lots to offer any gm or player, no matter the setting or need, chances are we have it. On the off chance we don't have what you're seeking, hopefully you'll be inspired by the other subs and add it yourself!
