Looking at this discussion, I am almost sorry to have mentioned that I would be gone for a while.....

Let me tell you about my vacation instead:

We went for two weeks to the alpes in france, where we managed to time our arrival just two days before a national holliday. (Song, drinks, festivities, fun and party guaranteed.) On top of that, we also had "The tour de france" come to the village next to our campsite, so we took an afternoon standing by the road, watch the commercial caravanne come by and then we had a lead group pass by (no lance armstrong) then six minutes nothing, then the "peloton" came by (including lance armstrong, but I did not recognize him)

next we went back to the campsite to watch the finish of the ettape, so we saw the leadgroup was overtaken, just a fex kilometers before the finish.

Besides that, we did not do much else as shopping and enjoying the warm summer weather (up to 40 degrees Celcius in the shade), the wind, the (icy cold) river.
I did bring out my kite a couple of times and we did go for a couple of hikes, but other then that, it was a very nice uneventfull vacation.

For now we are planning our next holliday somewhere in december, when we will be going on a trip around egypte. Seeing the piramids and all that kind of stuff.

For now however, I will be exploring more of Teolin and this Citadel.

To me that seems one hell of a journey... from Idaho(USA) all the way to europe, just to spend a couple of days between some high rising mountains...

Where exactly did you go?

Just wondering if I have ever been there, if it is in the french parts of the alps, there is a fair chance I have been there, as I think this was only the 15th time we spend some (or more) time there...

Well ehhr for a lot of Europeans, that part would no longer count as being "the alpes". But you are right, it is one of the more mounten like parts of Germany.

hmmm, does it show I don't like Germans and Germany too much?
Perhaps I am too french oriented....

I agree with captain. Also, the people of Germany were not the real bad guys. They were in a time of depression and debt, and their country was going down the tubes faster than you can say all of potatoes pronounciations. Hitler offered a solution to their problems, and they took it, having no other choice but more famine and poverty. Hitler then leveraged that power they gave him into his schemes for world domination, so the people of Germany are really not to be blamed for what they did, they had no choice.

I was once asked who was the person who influenced the world most strongly during the 20th century.
I gave the most contreversial answer ever by saing Hitler, but if you ask about influence, I do think he was the person who influenced the world the most. After all killing 6 million people, starting a war that left but the continent of south america untouched....

I do understand why during the war and the thirthy's the Germans where inclined to follow Hitler and to be honest, I can't realy blame them for that.
In the end, I am too young to hold the war against them.

I have my own reasons not to like germans and frankly, they have little to do with the war, I just don't like them. Lets just leave it at that.
By the way I know quite enough germans who I consider to be worth my time. Half of my RL family in law either comes from that country, or liver there. Still that does not mean I have to like the entire country.

To come back to the captains remark about the alps... Since I live in Europe, I feel I can make the distinction between some different mountain ridges.
Just like if I talk about the rocky mountains, I basicaly mean all the mountain ridges east of chicago.... I just have the feeling you will say there are a couple of different groups of mountains east of chicago.
It is a matter of perspective, which changes with distance. I never have wanted to make the point that you where wrong, I just wanted .... O just leave it alone.

Well....The Rocky Mountains are a distinct range, but generally, we do the same thing and only people in a particular state refer to the mountains around them as anything other than the Rockys. For instance, in Idaho, we have the Sawtooth mountains. What are they? They're the Rockys, just a different branch thereof.

Maybe there is a lot of forest fires in their branch of the rocky's?

Or maybe there are still wild indians who talk to each other using smoke signals....

Just a couple of ideas that popped to my mind...

Never mind I never was there and there is a fair chance I will never be there either, so what do I know....

Pretty much like it is right now in Europe.
France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece.... Forest fires...

One of the not so nice things is that the fires have swept over urban areas and burnt down a couple of campsides in France. Right now in France there are not too many problems, as most fires are "controled" now, but that is not the case in portugal, spain and italy.

so still guite a bit of natural tragedy over there

Actually, I call my local mountains the Smokies. I live in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.
