"They come in waves. Ever coming. Never faultering. Giant, armored titans of war that crush our greatest soldiers and sned civilizations toppling. For forty years we have fought them from the Atlantic all the way to the Mississippi. No one believes we can win this war. And that it is only a matter of time before the 'taint' of humanity is wiped from the face of the Earth."
It was forty years ago when the Malakith appeared.
The world of 2012 was a world on the verge of destruction. America's war in the Middle East had intensified, with the invasion of Iran in 2010 and the Iranians fighting savagely and brutally. War threatened to break out between China and North Korea against America when the USA found that North Korea had finally been able to make the technological jump to nuclear weapons and the West Coast of the US was threatened. Africa had disolved into a blood pit of warring civil strife and Europe was struggling to stop from going into a depression.
It was the perfect time for the Malakith to come.
In Northern Maine, just North of Dover Foxcroft next to a small lake and with no one around for miles, a ripping sound could be heard and suddenly electricity began to flow. A hole appeared the very fabirc of reality and continued to expand until it was nearly a hundred feet tall and seventy feet wide. Stopping there, the Gate seemed to solidify around the edges and stop growing. Hunters from Dover Foxcroft were the first to see this whole that seemed to lead to nothing.
In an hour, men from Washington had been shipped off to observe this and the science community debated upon what it could be. But they were soon answered when from the Gate, for that was what it was being called, came tall humanoid creatures in cobalt blue armor that began shooting at any human they saw.
The United States Armed Forces responded with what they felt was overwhelming force but the armor of these strange warriors absorbed the blows and were soon flowing in all directions. The US Armed Forces were repelled and defeated and the Americans fell back.
Meanwhile, that was not the only gate to have opened with one in Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia.
The one in Asia appeared in Beijing and the Chinese, feeling that these creatures were going to win. Responded with a Nuclear bombardment of all of Asia. When the dust settled, Asia was destroyed, the Chinese believing that they would destroy what these creatures would seek to capture instead of letting it fall into their hands.
In Congo, the Gate was opened out poured these creatures that soon overwhelmed all the forces brought to bear against them. Here would be the greatest slaughter of human life, the creatures adopting a policy of genocide that made all the prior holocausts appear trivial in comparison. In forty years, not a single human soul would remain on Africa, more than a billion people killed in the Great Holocaust of Africa.
In Europe, the Gate appeared just West of Paris and Western Europe soon fell and what was left of the fighting was in Eastern Europe where the Russians had rallied together and were fighting like they always had, under the guise of the Russian Republic that ruled all what was left of Europe.
South America was fighting under the Latin Union with the Malakith having landed in Brazil and the Falkland Islands. The advance of the creatures had been stopped near the city of La Plait and Buenos Aires. The narrow band of Human control was being called the Sangriento Estrecha, or Bloody Narrows.
In Southeast Asia, with the launch of nuclear weapons, most of the thousands of islands of Southeast Asia were nuclear wastelands, but the creatures had landed anyways and established a tentative hold on Australia that escaped largely unscathed by the nuclear bombardment.
