A new NPC, a plot, items, Advice please
« on: December 28, 2007, 03:12:18 AM »
Alright, This is the beginning of an NPC, a plot, and many items. Advice, help on details, criticism is welcome. 1st post, the beginning of great things….

Enoch Q. Os. is a trim tidy man, who appears to be in his thirties. He has dark brown hair, cut short, with a rakish mustache and goatee. He wears fine clothes, usually of silk, that are elegant in their simplicity. Emerald eyes glitter mischievously underneath finely arced brows, nad his mouth is always slightly quirked upward on the left side, giving the impression that he has found amusement in a joke that only he has heard. Green is his favorite color, and it is common theme in his clothing. He walks jauntily, usually whistling a vaguely recognizable tune that you just cant catch. In dealing with him, one gets the sense that they have just missed something. Which is exactly how Q wants it….

Q’s master, Zan, was the greatest trickster of his age.. All of his life, Q has tried to do him one better.  Zan constantly tricked Q, and it infuriated Q that he could never anticipate the mischief of his master, much less beat him at his own game. Even in death, Zan let his teasing spread from the grave. His last words bespoke of a challenge to Q. Zan possessed great power and accumulated vast amounts of arcane knowledge over his lifetime. He hid his phylactery in secret place. That mysterious place was…his kitchen table. Yes, just to infuriate him, Zan hid his mighty phylactery in plain sight, knowing the torment Q would endure over such an obvious jibe. To throw salt on the wound, Zan left behind a simulacrum containing his essence in order to better watch Q suffer and crack corny jokes at his expense. The only way Q can posses his masters power is by playing a trick worthy of Zan’s approval. Zan himself has said that when that day comes he, or rather his sim, will on bended knee present hos phylactery to Q. For Q, this will not only signify his coming into real, power but also the satisfaction of finally having bested his loved/hated master.

Enoch Q Os., or Q, is a man on a mission. For the first part of his plan, he has created a plethora of magical items, magical items that aren’t quite what they seem. To name a few, the incredibly powerful Spirit Tonic, which can all but the most fatal wounds, but has the unfortunate effect of a three day bout of inebriation on behalf of both parties, as both healer and the one being healed, have to drink it. Q has a passion for irony; it amuses him to no end when one of his schemes unfolds in a manner unforeseen. He loves to play elaborate tricks and create situations full of confusion and chaos. Q’s mantra is, “there is always a deeper level”. His words are webs laced with hints, and half truths, outright lies, and clues. Only the clever, and sometimes those blessed with a modicum of common sense will have a chance of piercing his veil of vagaries.

However, he is not evil, just incredibly mischievous. Q does have a twisted code of honor. Under no circumstances will any killing be tolerated.

For his latest trick, Q is posing as advisor to a governor of medium size town. From there he manipulates events. The Setup is as follows. A swamp surrounds the town. All the flora and fauna are Q eyes and ears; nothing goes undetected within the reaches of the swamp. Consequently, whenever a band of adventures happens by, they will conveniently witness one of Q’s beautiful lady servants (he is a man, after all) run into trouble, maybe on the run from some hungry water boars. Upon rescuing her, she will ask them to guide her through the swamp and back to the town where her rich grandfather will reward them handsomely. Or, she can not say that they will be rewarded, and just as she is thanking them, BOOM, round two, a swarm of monsters come out of nowhere, and powerful ones at that. The npc’s can either run for the town, or get slaughtered. Hard choice, huh?

Something happens so that the npc’s gear gets damaged or destroyed, so when they reach the town they will have to buy some supplies. All of the supplies will have replaced with Q’s magical items, items that are more than what they seem. Somehow, the npc’s will have ot be manipulated into going on an adventure that has been sabotaged by Q, in which they will be forced to use his items. In the end, If the npc’s can figure it out, and escape his traps with their sanity intact, he will offer his services to them as one who has been bested, provided that the npc’s help him achieve his goal of attaining Zan’s phylactery. This could lead to some interesting plots later. What I envision is Q showing up at the most inconvenient times, and often being more of a nuisance than a help. In a pinch, he will always come through. This will happen even more as he eventually befriends some of the npc’s, and comes to see them as more than just pawns.

He is certainly a fascinating NPC.

A couple of questions before further comments.

Is the kitchen table the actual phylactery? Or is it a salt shaker on the kitchen table or something of that nature?

What is his master plan, and what is the second part? I take it his master plant is to one-up Zan, by impressing his old master with a super-trick? Is that it? Is the second part the plot you describe? Slightly confused on that.

This could be quite interesting. I like the concept of replacing mundane and necessary equipment with Q's peculiar magic items. Careful with all the rail-roading though. This has to be handled in a subtle manner by the GM.

I will try to think of further comments soon. Interesting premise, Obsidian!

Oh, and btw, a list of Q's wackadoo magic items would make a nice scroll!

Murometz, my friend truly great minds think alike. Q's magical items are all in the making as we....type.
I have a whole list that will soon be ready for submission.

I think that the phylactery will be something small and simple, like Zan's wizard hat. Ideas are welcome.
