Back in the day it only took a D&D novel to make me happy. Sadly, such is not the case anymore.
It is easy to drop off the fantasy train when all the books you read are targetted at 12-20 year old young white males. However, the realm of fantasy has more to offer.
I personally recommend two great authors, whose work is adult, grim and realistic. These authors should prove adequate for jaded gamers and genre weary readers alike!
1. Steven Erikson
He is over the top, he is munchkin, but oh boy: The man can write!
Think of his epics as if they were in the vein of the Greec Iliad and Odyssey. His vast person gallery, his numerous factions and the excellence of his imagination and quality of writing makes these books some of the best fantasy has to offer.
2. George R. R. Martin
Court intrigue and multiple points of view. This author has an authentic and gripping story to tell and there is no black or white. Not really. Martin's setting is wonderful, and the storyline is never predictable.
