Anybody ever use Eclipse?
« on: September 20, 2007, 05:11:29 PM »
Anybody ever use http://www.eclipse.org/ for coding?

I keep reading about it and downloaded it awhile ago and they just came out with a new PHP developement tools for it ( http://www.eclipse.org/pdt/ ) and I was thinking about giving it a try.

Just curious if anybody used it for other developement and was curious about the experience before I invest the limited time I have in trying it.

Yep, I used it for a while back when Java was my thing. I used it for SWT coding (Improved Java GUI), and I loved it. I even began reading this 1500 page book about the IDE.

Nowadays I am a Microsoft slut and Visual Studio is my tool of choice, but I still remember with fondness all the things Eclipse could do, and Visual Studion couldn't.

IBM is putting all their money on Eclipse. It is a real professional's tool. I'd put my money on Eclipse.

REAL programmers do it in a text editor.

Well, business life programmers need all the assistance they can to finish development before the deadline, so I heartily recommend Eclipse. ;)

Will do. Will mess with it next time I get into it. Hopefully this weekend.

Top priority, figure out if I can FTP through it without having to have an actual ftp program.

Found this little gem. Unfortunately its commercial: http://www.editpadpro.com/. I am using it for my all my day to day stuff now, It has built in transparent ftp, dom navigation and clip collection, as well as reg exp and so many other stuff! You can even bind scripts and use them on your files while you edit. (this goes beyond things like htmltidy, since you can have whatever you want bound to the editor shortcuts, from a python script, through to a C program).

I think there is a way to use the trial version indefinitely, although the legality would be compromised.

Jedit http://www.jedit.org/ is also a pretty good editor, and has an ftp module, although unlike EPP, I haven't personally tried the module. Its also free-GPL, so you might prefer it. But boy, does it take a while to load!

Hope it helps!

Man, EditPad! The older version is still available for free, and I even use it instead of Notepad on Win OSes. It has most things you could want from a simple small editor, and it fits into one executable. Handy thing that.
Do not correct me, I know I am wrong.

This weekend turned into a cub scout camping trip so didn't get to anything...again. Wouldn't have passed up the weekend though. Camping is always fun.

Bear incidents in the US too?

Over here several hunters have been torn apart by bears lately. It is as if the bears have had enough and just decided to rid themselves of the hunters... ;)

Oh, and Eclipse is a nice development tool, though my experiences with it as an editor are so-so. It embeds Word, if memory serves, and around here somewhere is a thread where I prattle about the ideal organizational benefits of Eclipse.

But I am a MS slut (MS Developer) now, so... I'll keep my yap shut. ;)
