Review:  The Immortal Coil (forum-based roleplay)

Site:  http://www.mooncalfstudios.com/tic/bbace/portal.php
Cost:  Free

The Immortal Coil is a forum-based fantasy roleplaying game.  Unlike most forum-based games it's not completely freeform.  Character creation elements have been added to define a character's abilities in the game, and players are expected to abide by their characters limitations and powers.  The main emphasis of the game is on roleplay, and written forum posts are the most efficient way to allow a character to develop.  The game has its own world, but the forum includes areas for roleplay outside of that world.  Though posts are limited to PG-13 standard, adult themes can be explored to some extent.

Starting The Immortal Coil involves creating a character of one of four races: human, elf, dwarf, or ork.  Cross-breeds between any of the different races (including such oddities as ork-dwarf) may also be created.  Humans are definitely the weakest of the races, and there are currently too few players of orks and dwarves to determine if they are balanced against elves.  Because of the games emphasis on roleplay, however, power balance isn't as important as it might be other games.  Attributes are determined randomly, but may be rerolled as many times as desired.  There are no classes in the game, but once play has begun a character may acquire a "descent" and become either a mage, vampire, or werewolf.  All the races aside from humans have racial powers that may be acquired in addition to powers available to each descent.

In addition to the roleplay boards, characters have skills which they may improve through training (spending the game's "money") or practice (succeeding on specific tasks).  In addition to combat characters may develop skills in mining (finding ore and gemstones), stonecutting (improving ore and gemstones to fetch higher prices), forging (repairing weapons and armor), enchanting (improving weapons and armor), and thieving.  As combat can include PvP these skills can be an integral part of the game, but can also be ignored.

In play the game turns out to have a nice balance between freeform and computerized elements. People whose experience is limited to computer games may find the freeform aspects difficult to handle at first, but should either catch on quickly or discover that this particular game isn't for them.  The game world could also stand to be fleshed out a little more.  However, game development is ongoing and the developer is very responsive to player suggestions.  Additionally the existing group of players is friendly and helpful.  Overall this is an excellent game for roleplayers, storytellers, or those who simply want to write.

You don't have to be a villian or supers fan to really enjoy this one.

Effectively a guide to personality development, with some random tables included - could be interesting for coming up with bare bones for a submission.

Phoenix Lore rose from the ashes after Knowledge Arcana crashed and burned.  Some of the material is directed toward specific game systems (D&D, Magic: The Gathering), but other articles are useful whatever system you prefer.

Best of all, it's free.

Unnatural20 (www.unnatural20.com or www.u20.ca) is a site about Dungeons and Dragons, the pen-and-paper tabletop roleplaying game (RPG).

We have a few simple goals at U20.
To provide you with the best monster-related RPG tips and encounters on the net; we want you running (and fighting) your critters better and faster;
To provide you with the highest-quality, most complete downloadable monsters; we want you running cooler critters with little to no prep time; and

The SCP Foundation

"    Mankind in its present state has been around for a quarter of a million years, yet only the last 4,000 have been of any significance. So, what did we do for nearly 250,000 years? We huddled in caves and around small fires, fearful of the things that we didn't understand. It was more than explaining why the sun came up, it was the mystery of enormous birds with heads of men, and rocks that came to life. So we called them 'gods' and 'demons,' and begged them to spare us and prayed for salvation.

In time, their numbers dwindled and our numbers rose. The world began to make more sense when there were less things to fear. Yet, the unexplained can never truly go away, as if the universe demands the absurd and impossible.

Mankind must not go back to hiding in fear. No one else will protect us, we must stand up for ourselves.
While the rest of mankind dwell in the light, we must stand in the darkness to combat it, contain it, and shield it from the eyes of the public, so that others may live in a sane, normal world.

We secure. We contain. We protect."

"SCP artifacts pose a significant threat to global security. Various agencies from around the world operate to maintain human independence from extra-terrestrial, extra-dimensional, and extra-universal threat. In the past humankind has been at the whim of these bizarre artifacts and similar phenomena, but we have now reached a point in history where we can begin to control and contain these defiances of natural law.

You are now working for the SCP Foundation. You have no need to understand how or why we operate. What you do need to understand is how vital your mission is."

A collection of weird items and creatures, most fitting a sci-fi, modern or horror game, but not without other inspirations for other games.
Do not correct me, I know I am wrong.

Triumph of the Dungeon Master!

Ah, how I have come to love that sense of accomplishment and victory that I get when I pull the wool over the eyes of a clever player character. What DM Triumphs have you had?

Some of mine:
1. Finally killing an incredibly powerful, lucky, annoying player's character.
2. Finally achieving a TPK (Total Party Kill)
3. Finally achieving a TPK using only traps
4. Finally working out how to make it so that d**n wizard doesn't steal the spotlight all the d**n time.

greetings,

let me introduce you some really new and groundshaking. i have developed a website, rpgonline.hu that makes possible to play any kind of pen&paper tabletop roleplaying games online like it was originally meant to be played, like it was possible never before. equipped with a java voip webphone (a web based internet softphone) running right on the page and requires no installation at all, and is completely browser and OS independent (x86), you can play through speaking, almost like you were sitting with each other of your friends or new players and all this the easiest way ever. go ahead and let's try it. register yourself with your friends, announce a new game session and you are ready to go. english language selector in the upper right corner of the page, and dice roller chat included. any suggestions are welcome. if you have any problem, just contact me.

regards, stargazer

Great site that gives some world building logic advice.

============

30 Days of WorldBuilding - http://www.web-writer.net/fantasy/days/index.html

A lot of times, people want to write a novel and think "I want to write fantasy, but there's so much world-building I would have to do-- I haven't done any of it!" As everyone signing up for NaNoWriMo or any writing challenge quickly learns, this is really the self-editor speaking; it's another way of saying "I can't."

So, give yourself 7 and a half hours this month-- 15 minutes a day-- to build a world. It's not going to be Perfect or Set. Why would it be? You haven't actually written the story yet, you haven't tested its limits. But it'll give you something to start with, something to feel comfortable about when you start.

===========

Fantasy Worldbuilding Questions - http://www.sfwa.org/2009/08/fantasy-worldbuilding-questions/

The following list of questions is meant to aid authors of fantasy fiction who are seeking to create believable imaginary settings for their stories. While many of these questions may be helpful or crucial to certain stories, they will not all apply to every story. It is not necessary for an author to answer all, or even any, of the questions in order to start writing, (or to finish writing, either). The idea is simply to provoke people into thinking about the ways their settings and backgrounds hang together … or don’t. If it’s useful, use it. If not, don’t.

Those are some awesome videos. I think I will give first place of this magic item quest a gem set of their choice and second place an opaque set.

That is within my budget!

Game science dice are really nice.  We bought everyone a set for our D&D game, and they roll well.  The only downside is that the color in the numbers tends to wear off really quickly, even if you get the pre-painted ones.  At least, that was the case for the black opaque dice -- the turquoise and lavender sets aren't showing it yet.

Just a pair of links dealing with sandboxes and nonlinear design.

West Marches
I think I've posted this before but I don't really care.  It's basically someones notes from running a sandbox campaign.

Slaughterhouse
I remember talking to someone about this, I'm pretty sure it was CM.  Anyway, it uses design elements from the Metroid games to help design nonlinear campaigns.
One can cure oneself of the not un- formation by memorizing this sentence: A not unblack dog was chasing a not unsmall rabbit across a not ungreen field.  Orwell

(13:23:49) (Chinchillas): See? You can write like an 4$$h013 when you're not writing like a pompous 4$$h013.

Not really a gaming site, but an amazing resource nonetheless.

Essentially, you can get all of the old Dragon magazines as .pdf format.  It is supposed to be legal as well somehow.
