Probably. In fact, if you look really closely, you can see the very Image of Lucifer reflected in the dice pictured above! That's right, we roleplayers have sold our souls to the Evil One in return for Earthly Power and Riches! After all, how else can you explain why roleplayers are all rich, beautiful, self-confident jet-setters....

Hang on, there's something wrong with that picture. I wonder what it could be?

Some sweet articles. Good one on the undead.

You will find here more than 500 monsters that haunt our history and culture.

Most might be imaginary but they reflect the archetypes upon which are built our dreams and our society. Find your own monster, and you will find your true place in this world.....

GameTable Online

http://www.gametableonline.com/

Okay. I do not like to hawk pay sites. But this one can be worth it. If you want to play some quick boardgames, but don't have people to play them with, this is it. It has a free 14 day membership.

Even if you don't play the games, the site hosts several features for GAMA lists of links. (If you enter the site, click game resources, then rpg resources, you can get back here to Strolen's)

http://gamestoredirectory.com/wwwthreads/index.php?url=%2Fwwwthreads%2Fhtdocs%2Fcommon%2Fstore_directory.php&vars=%3Fstore_id%3D5084

GameTable Online was incorporated in Massachusetts in January 2001.

It is a privately held corporation whose mission is to:
Provide an Internet game playing service for the strategy board, card and dice gaming market.

Strengthen the industry by introducing players to hit games that they may never have played before.

Provide a place for gamers to learn about the industry, enjoy their hobby and talk with each other.

Establish an Internet revenue stream for game publishers as a further recognition of their great work

Not that active of a community, but interesting enough

Welcome to Chablis Roleplaying Productions’ F.O.G on-line community. Our goal is to provide useful and reasonably priced products and services for gamers and as a part of that we've provided this site as an on-line community for gamers of all stripes.

This site is intended for use by you, the gamer at large. This is not to say that there won't be any content set up or posted by us, we intend to use the site as well and it has largely taken over from the "main" F.O.G site while I decide what to do with that. Thus you can find Fishy (ie me) serving as administrator here and trying hard to keep that identity seperate from my responsibilities as a Partner in CRP and thus F.O.G. Fortunately I am a gamer and that makes me an old hand at simulating Multiple Personality Disorder.

The Giant
« Reply #257 on: July 22, 2005, 10:16:05 AM »
http://www.giantitp.com/thegiant.html

The web comic is admusing.

Rich Burlew (Giant in the Playground): The founder of this site and the guy who writes almost everything here, Rich first broke into game writing with Wizards of the Coast's Fantasy Setting Search in late 2002, where he was one of only three finalists asked to prepare a full 125-page bible for their setting. Ultimately, he was defeated by his archnemesis, Keith Baker, for whom his fiery wrath still burns like the heat of a thousand suns. Rich has since gone on to contribute to Wizards' Monster Manual III and Paizo's Dragon Magazine, as well as working on top secret projects that, were you to learn of them, would almost certainly spell your doom.

In the summer of 2003, Rich founded www.GiantITP.com as a thinly-veiled means of promoting himself as a game designer. It met with middling success until he invented his now-signature webcomic, The Order of the Stick. Since then, the site has been growing by leaps and bounds, leading Rich to believe he is destined to crush the world political order with an unstoppable army of zombie webcomic readers.

While it shocks anyone who sees the Order of the Stick before they meet him, Rich actually attended design school and has a degree in Illustration and Graphic Design. He has absolutely no formal training as an author, however, which only leads to periodic panic attacks when he realizes he has committed to produce a few thousand words within a short span of time. In addition to his obvious interests in gaming and comics, Rich watches Iron Chef religiously and has a DVD collection that is on the verge of achieving sentience. Tragically, he lives in Queens, NY.

The Illuminator's Guild
« Reply #258 on: July 23, 2005, 11:11:04 PM »
http://illuminatorsguild.com/index.php

What is the Illuminators' Guild?

The guild is a voluntary coalition of semi-professional and professional freelance artists who specialize in character art based on roleplaying game worlds such as AD&D, Shadowrun, EverQuest, or Ultima Online. The primary goals of the guild are:

to showcase the work of member artists in a centralized location

to serve as an interface between the artists and the many gamers interested in obtaining one-of-a-kind, custom character portraits based on their own descriptions

to provide artistic advice and instruction to neophyte artists

We are here to make the process of locating a portrait artist as quick and painless as possible.

Please read the rest of the FAQ before you rampage through the site.

This game is one of those secret gems. Few people have heard of it, but those few seem to become fanatical about it. While I loathe to plug pay games/ sites, this one is worth looking at. Honest. Have I lied to you? Have I lied to you and got caught? Have I lied to you recently?

Imagine...
A place where everything is made of ice.

There are no trees. There are no rocks. There is only ice.

Imagine a place unchanged since the end of the Great Ice Age -
over 20,000 years ago.

A place where the mighty Woolly Mammoth might still roam!

Imagine a place where the sun shines every hour of every day -
for almost half of the year! Then - darkness for the rest of the year.

This is the home of the Throps - rulers of the long summer day.
This is the home of the Squallhoots - rulers of the long winter night.

This is Athropolis

Have you ever wanted to run a game in a world of perpetual winter? In a world of Ice and Snow? Did you tinker with it, then stop because you didn't know much about this kind of environment... and the setting didn't seem to have verisimiltude? Well here is the information you need.

The information could be used for a simple travel story arc as well.

Here is the information in easy to digest bits. Sure most of these sites are geared for kids. But you can breeze through the site's information and still get the important pieces you need to know to set up such an environment.

American Heritage Fighting Arts Association 18th-19th Century Martial Arts

The AHFAA is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Western fighting arts as they evolved in America, and as they were practiced in the countries that the New Americans were leaving behind.

This includes both academic research and practical training with a number of historical weapons; blackpowder shooting, unarmed combat skills, physical culture, and traditional health exercise are practiced as well.

Alliance Director Pete Kautz founded the original American Heritage Fighting Arts curriculum back in 1998. Now, with an International Counsel of Advisors, the AHFAA is taking things to the next level in the promotion of both the American martial arts and American history and culture, as well!

I don't like to plug pay sites and companies, but this is another little game gem you might of missed. It has many positive qualities.

Cursed Empire Fantasy Roleplay provides a dark, comprehensive medieval fantasy game system with subtle undertones of the heroic age of Ancient Greece. This game offers Players and GM’s detailed and flexible rules to suit their gaming style for combat, movement, magic, aptitudes and a host of other gaming situations.

CERPG endeavours to capture the thrill of realistic situations through its game system without compromising playability as well as providing a modular approach to the way that situations are handled, enabling MT’s (Masters of Tales) to personalise the level of intrusion of magic and fantasy within their campaign.

Note: CERPG Offers the basic mechanics through the Spartans Unleashed Game system to develop your own campaigns through a host of settings. More material will develop this further in future publications.

One Thousand Monkeys, One Thousand Typerwriters
« Reply #263 on: August 06, 2005, 12:42:38 PM »
http://www.1km1kt.net/

1KM1KT, or one thousand monkeys at one thousand typewriters, was founded in early 2001 as an independent web-based publishing group. The initial goal was to establish a web based community where authors and fans could come together to share their passion for role-playing games and to serve as a showcase for their individual projects.

After an overwhelming response, 1KM1KT was redesigned in February of 2004 to include the genres of science fiction and fantasy writing as well as artwork and other forms of general fiction. The goal of 1KM1KT today is to promote independent writers seeking public exposure and introduce them to devoted fans and publishers around the world.

1KM1KT features an open submission policy, a discussion forum for topics of the day, and an online art gallery. They provide free promotion to contributing authors in the form of online publishing; and serve as a resource for brick and mortar publishing companies, online newsletters, magazines, and commercial websites seeking content for their publications.

1KM1KT hopes that this site will further the ambitions of writers and artists today and continue to foster goodwill and encourage growth within the community.

Ars Magica rocks!
« Reply #264 on: August 11, 2005, 04:30:19 PM »
http://www.redcap.org/

Project Redcap is a World Wide Web site devoted to Ars Magica and run by David Chart. Geoff Grabowski founded it in 1994, and it now contains links to 264 Ars Magica resources, 161 of which are in English. We always welcome new additions, so please, if you know of any other pages not listed here, send the URL at to me at redcap@redcap.org.

Current ArsMagica company site
http://www.atlas-games.com/arm5/index.php

And for those that do not know it:
Ars Magica
1st ed by Jonathan Tweet, Mark Rein*Hagen (1987) Lion Rampant
2nd ed (1989)
3rd ed by Ken Cliffe, Mark Rein*Hagen (1992) White Wolf
4th ed by Jeff Tinball, John Nephew (1996) Atlas
5th ed by David Chart (2004) Atlas

An RPG set in "Mythic Europe" where hermetic magi work secretly in hidden covenants. The system is fairly simple: attribute + skill + 1d10, but the main rules are in the innovative magic system. The magic works by a "noun + verb" system. Magi have ratings in 10 "Forms" (nouns) and 5 "Arts" (verbs), given in Latin as fits the setting. Any spell corresponds to a noun/verb combination (like "Creo Ignem" meaning "Create Fire"). Resolving a spell means comparing (Form rating) + (Art rating) + 1d10 vs level of difficulty.

Fate - Another Gem

http://www.faterpg.com/

FATE: Fantastic Adventures in Tabletop Entertainmentâ„¢

Fate is a free RPG that focuses on telling stories and balancing characters based on story significance, rather than points and cool powers. It's the system of choice for GMs who are looking for rules that get out of the way of the story, but still provide enough structure to get the job done.

The Fate system is based on the Open Gaming License version of Fudge, and was previously based upon the Fudge License version. A rich text system reference document, and the PDF version of the game, are available in our downloads section

If you think you'd be interested in using Fate for one of your own projects, free or commercial, please contact us and let us know!

The authors of Fate are currently hard at work on The Dresden Files RPG, which will use Fate. Check it out!

http://www.citymayors.com/index.html

In this century (as it was centuries past), metropolitan areas, rather than nation states, will (have) shape the world’s social, cultural, technological and economic agendas. This process will lead to increased competition for human, intellectual and material resources but, also, force cities to co-operate with and learn from one another. City Mayors promotes constructive competition and acts as a forum for cooperation and communication between cities.

The site explains a great deal on how cities are run, designed, and develop. While most of the entires are "modern" they can be used for explanations of ancient cities.

A few others:

Welcome to Scifi 411. If you’re reading this, then you are probably wondering what this website is all about.

I’m a big fan of science fiction and fantasy, in all of its mediums. I’ve made it a habit to be "up" on the latest news on my favorite science fiction/fantasy shows and movies. So, I figured I would share the love and post the information on the web. But hey, don’t let me take all the credit. I also welcome any articles, letters, reviews, and news scoops that you would like to send me.

Let us have a moment of silence

re: http://www.strolen.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=33984#33984

World History research has taken a great blow.

A great site has left us. Let us mourn. There are some legacy links left behind: Here they are...

Ancient History
http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/ancient/asbook.html
The Internet Ancient History Sourcebook is a companion to the Internet Medieval Sourcebook and the Internet Modern History Sourcebook. The Medieval Sourcebook is both a classroom resource and the largest collection of online medieval texts. The Ancient and Modern Sourcebooks have a different role: since there are already ample online repositories of texts for these periods, the goal here is to provide and organize texts for use in classroom situations. Links to the larger online collections are provided for those who want to explore further. The distinctive feature of the Sourcebooks' layout remains here - the avoidance of images and multiple "clicking" to find texts.

Anthro studies
http://www.anthro.net/
On the World Wide Web there are an estimated 250,000 sites that have content relating to the subject matter of anthropology. Unfortunately an estimated four-fifths contain little useful information. There are tens of thousands of anthropology sites containing redundant links to other pages that are collections of redundant links. Anthro.Net cuts through all of this by using advanced search technology to hunt down sites that contain useful content and information relating to anthropology.

Encyclopedia Mythica
http://www.pantheon.org/
Please enter the award-winning internet encyclopedia of mythology, folklore, and religion. Here you will find everything from A-gskw to Zveda Vechanyaya, with plenty in between.

The Labyrinth
http://labyrinth.georgetown.edu/
A great source we have mentioned two other times in this thread.

LacusCurtius: Into the Roman World
http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/home.html
The title says it all.

The Perseus Library
http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/
Perseus is an evolving digital library, engineering interactions through time, space, and language. Our primary goal is to bring a wide range of source materials to as large an audience as possible. We anticipate that greater accessibility to the sources for the study of the humanities will strengthen the quality of questions, lead to new avenues of research, and connect more people through the connection of ideas.

Voice of the Shuttle

This is a Humanities based search and research engine.

http://www.orionsarm.com

Orion's Arm is a bold new shared worldbuilding and creative writing project, creating and exploring a new vision of the future of humanity and other sentient beings, ten thousand years hence.

Our goal is to create a dramatic far-future universe that is internally consistent and abides as much as possible with the accepted facts and theories in the physical, biological, and social sciences. Thus matter cannot travel faster than light, matter and energy are conserved, no evolved humanoid aliens have been discovered, future ultratech social issues are likely to be very different to those of today, and so on. We embrace speculative ideas like drexlerian assemblers, mind uploads, posthuman intelligences, femtotech, magnetic monopoles, wormholes, as it is proposed that future sciences, technologies, and developments will make these possible. And we attempt a logical explanation for even the most fantastic-seeming elements in OA. We aim to paint a future that is plausible at every level, from the scientific to the social to the psychological.

Like all good art, this project is never complete but ever growing and evolving. We know that our duty is to create a universe that is interesting, inspiring and provocative - to theorize on a future that may, or may not, come to be. And we invite you to join us on this adventure.

To quote Arthur C. Clarke's Second Law:

The only way to explore the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.

Ecentric Cinema

Most gaming plots are a little better than a "good" bad movie. So why not go to the source and pick out plots and ideas from some of the best (of the odd and bad). Besides you may find things for your DVD collection.

This website is a true labor of love, not a business venture. EC's only compensation is the commission fees earned from sales of DVDs, videos and books purchased via the links we provide. Eccentric Cinema recommends Amazon for its selection, service & reliability.

Hope you like the site! I've been in love with horror, sci-fi and exploitation movies since I was a wee lad growing up on Air Force bases across America. This was back in the pre-cable days of four TV channels, when I had to sneak out of bed to catch the midnight monster show with volume turned way down as to not awake the parents. A ravenous film collector in this digital age, I'd be buying and watching these flicks anyway... so why not write about 'em and put it on the web? Thus the genesis of Eccentric Cinema. My other interests include politics, current events, and military history. (The Napoleonic Wars and World War II being the areas of keenest study.) Although a southern white male, I'm an agnostic, left-of-center Democrat who doesn't own any firearms. I currently reside in the Citadel of Elvis, by the banks of The Mighty Muddy, with my wife Catherine and our three cats.

Another of the "hate to plug a pay site/ company, but there are some gems you could of missed.

Indie Press Revolution (IPR) is a radical new way of selling RPGs and RPG-related products. Founded by Ed Cha of Open World Press and Brennan Taylor of Galileo Games, IPR is a "direct sales first" network of quality creator-publishers. That means we only carry the best of the best in the independent press, selling directly to you, the customer, first.

This approach serves two purposes. First, customers know that whatever they order from us meets a certain standard of quality because we selectively recruit the creator-publishers listed on our site. Second, creator-publishers receive a greater portion of a sale on our site than almost anywhere else because we sell direct. They also have greater control over pricing and better access to direct communication with customers.

We founded IPR as not only a business venture, but an artistic endeavor as well. Our goal is to provide the right business model, a profitable business model, for creator-publishers, so they can continue publishing their work. We've seen far too many great creator-publishers come and go and we want that to stop! By providing not only the right plan, but also the right place, to sell their products, we want to establish a community in which creator-publishers can flourish and share their ideas and visions together in a cooperative environment.

In addition, we want to help anyone with the right manuscript and funding get their work published and into the hands of as many people as possible. Since we both have "hands-on" experience in the publishing business, we can help you along the process as you get started. By joining our network, you will also have access to some of the brightest minds and most experienced souls among today's creator-publishers.

IPR is committed to bringing you great products directly from the people who create and publish them. You can help us continue to do this by supporting the independent creator-publishers on our site and join us in spreading the word.

Welcome to the Revolution!

Officially launched on December 1, 2004, IPR is growing rapidly and now has 18 members.
