Player Request: For King and Country
« on: July 16, 2007, 05:01:10 PM »
Title: For King and Country

Genre: Fantasy

Rule-Set: D20 system. Using the current SRD as Core mechanics. Additional sources may be considered.

Space Limitations: 6 players required

PC Restrictions:  All characters will start at level 5. Good Characters Preferred.
Non-Good characters must have alterior motivations for preventing a large scale civil war.

Synopsis: King Varnin has been missing for over a month now, and nobody knows where he has dissapeared to. By Royal Decree, if three months pass before the king is found, the next of kin inherits the throne until his return.

With King Varnin's eldest son having died on a quest several years before, the burden falls on his twin sons, Cedric and Francis. However, neither one wants to share the throne with the other and with time running out for the King's return, it looks like a massive civil war is inevitable.

Find the king before time runs out, or thousands will die.

Rules: 32 point buy.

Female characters get +2 Charisma and -2 Strength.

Send all character stats to me before the game starts.

Each player gets 5 Luck Points at the start of the game. Luck Points will allow you to redo one single action, or, redo somebody elses action that somehow effects you. They can also be used to give you a better chance of  succeeding at something. Its up to you how you use them.

Paladins and Clerics must choose a deity. Spells don't come from ideals.

I am allowing for the creative usage of the Knowledge skill. Even for Combat. If it makes sense, I will probably go along with it.

Sorcerers have diplomacy as a class skill.

If you don't want to create a character sheet, then give me a character concept and I will create one for you. It probably won't be as good as you could have done yourself though, so I recommend creating your own.

Notes: This will be a very standard fantasy game, without the need for major variations on classic roleplaying. There will be a few things to keep in mind however:

1) I will let the players lose. I might fudge a few die rolls, but I won't be pulling any miracles.

2) There will be a little bit of everything. A balanced party could make the difference between success and failure.

3) Not every challenge should be fought. Pick your battles carefully.

4) Ingenuity will be rewarded. Be clever, be smart, be crafty. The direct approach isn't always the only road to success.

5) Don't write down your alignment. Play your character to their character, not to their "alignment". Besides, my alignment definitions may be different than yours.

Is this still viable?  If it is, I'll play.  (I might need some help stating a char, I'm unfamiliar with point buy.)

the deadline for player requests is when this thread gets bumped to second place. If I don't have six players by then, I will just cancel it.

Triumph of the Dungeon Master!

Ah, how I have come to love that sense of accomplishment and victory that I get when I pull the wool over the eyes of a clever player character. What DM Triumphs have you had?

Some of mine:
1. Finally killing an incredibly powerful, lucky, annoying player's character.
2. Finally achieving a TPK (Total Party Kill)
3. Finally achieving a TPK using only traps
4. Finally working out how to make it so that d**n wizard doesn't steal the spotlight all the d**n time.

Awesome, it seems that we have 6 players.

Ria,

32 Point buy works like this:

Each stat has a starting score of 8. You have 32 points to put into those scores at a 1-to-1 ratio (one free point that you have available can be spent to increase an attribute score by one point). When a score reaches 14, it doubles in price, and you have to spend points on that attribute at a 2-to-1 ratio (so to get your Dexterity up from 14 to 15, you have to spend 2 points.) Then, once an attribute score reaches 18, it costs 3 points each, and after 22, it costs 4 points each. Then you add racial bonuses. Then you add level bonuses.

So, for example, I have all 8's. I want to increase my dexterity to the absolute exclusion of everything else.
I have 32 points available, so I spend 6 points on Dex. This puts my Dex at 14, leaving me with 26 points.
Then I spend (at a 2-to-1 ratio) 8 points on my Dex. My dex is now 18, and I have 18 points left.
Then I spend another 12 points (at a 3-to-1 ratio) on my Dex. My dex is now 22 and I have only 6 points left.
Finally, I spend the last of my points at a 4-to-1 ratio, to increase my Dex to 23, leaving me with only 2 points left.
With my last 2 points, I increase my Strength (at a 1-1 ratio) up to 10. My ability scores are now all 8's except for a 10 in Str, and a 23 in Dex.
I then add my racial bonus to my scores. I chose to be Halfling because it improves my Dex. Because I am a Halfling, I get a +2 to Dex, and a -2 to Str. This decreases my Str to 8 and boosts my Dex to 25.
This leaves me with an 8 in all of my ability scores except for Dexterity, which is 25.
Finally, because the game starts at level 5, each player gets to start with a single +1 improvement to one ability score for having reached level 4.
I put this into Dex, increasing my Dexterity to 26. This makes my stats all 8's with a 26 in Dexterity.

Scrasmax,

Since the SRD are identical to the Core Rulebooks of D&D 3.5 (with some layout changes and some omissions), all D&D 3.5 Core Rule Books are allowed (not including the Monster Manual) for use in character creation.

All,

Characters all have a starting wealth of 4,500gp to be spent any way that you want. I will automatically assume that all characters have the following:
1 Pack
1 Adventurer's Outfit
1 Purse
1 Water Skin
1 Torch
1 Magic Jug of Oil (4 hours). It refills automatically each time you leave or enter a town.
5 Feet of Cloth
5 Feet of Rope
1 Knife
3 Ounces of Lint from mercifully unnamed sources

If you have a question as to whether or not I will allow something, ask first. Forgiveness is not easier to obtain than Permission, and I often grant unusual player requests.

Characters should be ready within about a week. If you finish up faster, we can start sooner.

d6=18
d8=23
d10=28
d12=33

Then add 5x(Constitution Modifier)

this may not be as good a question, but

Is this a travel-based game? Or palace/court intrigue-ish? (one main location).

Just want to know while I ponder a character and feed my army of tiny monsters.

To Murometz,

As I said, there will be some of everything, but rest assured that you will not all be in the same location for the entire story.

To Dozus,

You can play any race with a level adjustment of +0. Outside of that, you need special permission. PM me
