Manifest Destiny, or, 15440 and Fight!
« on: June 06, 2007, 06:14:41 PM »
The Year is 15540. Like a dozen empires before him, the age of Man has come and now is, his grasp upon the stars fading a little more every day as world after world succeeds from the empire he named 'Federation', but rich indeed is his legacy. Light were his chains, his stick, a carrot. Now, even as the Federation crumbles, a hundred and more successor states stand poised to grasp the holy grail of dominion, each with their own view of the perfect galaxy. Even larger, now, are the numbers of fringe worlds, where law is tenuous, often becoming the law of might.

Into this shattered world you are thrust, to live or die by your gun, and your wits.

The galaxies:

Three gems floating through the depth of space, two lesser gems in orbit around the greater third. These are the Milky Way and the Magellenic Clouds. The majority of civilizations can be found spread throughout the arms of the Milky Way, for few creatures, indeed, few worlds, can bear the heat and radiation of the core of the Milky Way, and the Clouds are so very distant. Even by the power of the modern hyper drive, the trip there and back is measured in the decades.

Many are the layers of old civilizations that lie upon the gems of habitable worlds within the Milky Way, while many worlds bear the scars of ancient and abandoned colonies, for nearly a quarter of the rocky worlds within the galaxy have born the touch of civilization. Many of these worlds are now lost to their terraformed wildernesses, or to the cold of the night, or to their own errors, as was fair Mars, the second home of mankind.

(Much more to come)

The Terran Federation:

The linked crises of oil depletion and overpopulation were not enough to unite Humanity under a single banner. Nor was the survival of the fallout of the Small War of 2041,  when fully a fifth of the earth's men and women were slain in a flash of nuclear light. Scattered across the surface of earth, fighting each other in the alien tunnels underneath beneath the soil of Mars, Humankind was easy prey. And in 2174, the predators struck. In one rapid wave, the Renja and their battle thralls struck the Sol System, coming to claim not the still-formidable resources of the 8 major worlds there, but rather, to claim humanity itself.

Swiftly breeding, versatile, shockingly malleable as individuals, and still bearing the war-lust bred out of the majority of sentient races, the Renja had calculated that Humanity would make the perfect battle thrall. The war of claiming, however, would be swift, for humanity had not the technology nor the united front with which to fight off their new alien overlords. For nearly fifteen hundred years, then, this would be Humankind's fate. They would be the perfect soldiers, conquering nearly half the galaxy for the Renja. But no race can be enslaved forever. As a revolt in the Perseus arm of the Milky Way erupted, human ships, commanded by Renja were sent to crush the rebellion. While the rebellion died beneath the flames of their star-fire, the last words of the rebel leaders rang in the ears of the human commanders. A plea to a God. A plea for freedom.

And as the words were considered, ancient legends and half-forgotten myths, told in whispers at night, began to resurface in the Human psyche. The memories of Old Terra resurfaced for these men and women, a glimmering sapphire of dreams in the starry night. And Humanity awoke from the slumber of slavery. Once again, proud Men arose, unfurling the new banner of Terra, even against their own brothers who remained loyal to their former masters.

The resulting war remains the most destructive conflict in the recorded history of the galaxy. No fewer than four trillion sophonts are counted as slain in the war, the populations of a thousand worlds reduced to atoms. Almost a quarter of these creatures were Humans, but nearly two and a half trillion of them were the Renja, slain at the last to every man, woman, renman, and child. The Human fleets had emerged victorious under Admiral William Kelly, flying the banner of Terra.

While he was the default leader of all humanity, Kelly would swiftly find his military structure singularly unsuited for the governance of every Human in the galaxy. Considering the stroke of history's pen, now that the censored records of their hated slave masters were available, he made a decision. He would not serve as an admiral, nor even a monarch, but as a president. Each of the new human worlds, he made a member state of his Federation, granting them significant self-governance, and gathering their representatives into a Senate, which would make laws and advise him. Only a few burdens of Empire would remain. Such was the beginning of the Terran Federation.

The other thralls of the Renja, too, they were cheerful to incorporate, at least for the greatest part, though many joined of fear in first. Among their fellow thralls came the Rosahomin, who made up the Renja's ground forces, in their vast numbers ,willing to follow any master that allowed them to spread, [insert races & reasons here. at least 3 more.]

Expanding by colonization, conquest and absorption, the Federation grew quickly, at a rate nearly unprecedented in history. By 6570, all of the Milky Way would lie beneath human domination, and eyes were cast to the near-by Magellenic Clouds. This would be the golden age of Federation.[To be continued.]

Federation Government:

Though they tried their hardest, fifteen hundred years of slavery was not enough for the Renja to completely stamp out Human independence, culture, and learning, though the lines of which was which became strongly blurred when no data crystals and few books survived outside of Terra proper. These dregs of information combined with their natural desire for a particular level of hierarchy, and their existing, military structure to create a peculiar new form of Republican, Constitutional Government, not entirely dissimilar to a combination of ancient Rome and America.

Executive power would be concentrated in the Triumvarte of Lords, each of whom would be intended to represent a facet of the empire's interaction with its people: The Lord of War, to whom all military matters would be given, the Lord of Coin, to whom all matters of the economy would be given, and the Lord of the Hearth, to whom all domestic welfare matters would be given. In theory, each of these Lords had significant over his sphere. In practice, a powerful degree of interdependence was needed between the three offices, and the Empire waxed or waned on the balance struck.

Legislative power would be given to the Senate of the Stars, with each world within the Empire having a voice, as well as certain interstellar organizations and corporations. Here, the taxation would be controlled, as well as many of the expenditures. Always fractious and usually weak, the Senate played second fiddle to the Triumvarte throughout much of its history.

Culturally, human kind would be forever fragmented. It would be almost five hundred years from their rebellion before the sons and daughters of Ancient Terra would find and identify their mother world, and through its recolonization, begin to return to what they once were. In the meantime, each outpost and colony world began to cobble together their own culture from what little ancient literature and custom remained to them, adapted to meet the special needs of their worlds. Many strange and bizaare cultures, theologies, and ways of life sprang into existance during this time period, far too many to list here.
