It's that time of year again. The day when beds are short-sheeted, when hoaxes abound, when stores are frequently asked whether they carry a
turn-of-the-century British crown prince in a can. Yes, it is April Fool's Day.
The media is infamous for
April Fool's Day hoaxes. Though most media hoaxes are simple "no harm, no foul" pranks, hoaxes occasionally cause
widespread panic. Imagine a similar hoax gained such prevelant acceptance, enough so that huge masses of people or even governments believed it. Worse, imagine it caused real societal shifts: rebellions, riots, wars.
Your challenge: write a sub that centers around a hoax gone wrong. It starts with a simple gag rumor, perhaps by word of mouth, but snowballs into something with far-reaching and unforseen effects. Use any setting you want: fantasy, modern, sci-fi, supers, whatever suits your taste. Anything so long as the hoax causes something very unexpected to happen.
As a bonus, the winner will - for a single day - gain unlimited Golden Submission voting abilities, able even to vote on their own subs!
