No, he just wishes. As in the action that consists of wishing. It's a verb, followed by a word that means 'also.' The was a conjunction, used to link two ideas, very commonly used in mid-sentence. Following that was the infamous subject, which in this case it 'I,' not to be confused with the body part which is in fact spelled 'eye.'
