I have been working for a while on this Falhath thing, chech the Freetext Falhath to see. One of the things that has really come to the forefront in the work is religion, a large part of that coming from the reading I was doing at the time of the region's genesis. Thus far there are two major faiths in Falhath, with a miscellaneous third faith of 'the Old Ways' trailing well behind the other two.
The Kingdom of Trinistine
The Kingdom defines itself by the borders of those who follow the Trininty and its creeds. This means that the kingdom itself is five to seven times the size of Falhath itself as it is the largest organized faith in the continent. In structure it resembles the Roman Catholic church using dioceses, bishops, and cathedrals. Part of this was done as I was reading into Catholicism, and the terms are easily understood, and because it reinforces the obviously heirarchial nature of the Trinity. At the top, things are very different as the Trinity is composed of a dragon spirit that was exalted by man and god alike, followed by a crafts/forge goddess displaced from her original home, and an aspect of death in Belex. There are various orders and groups within the faith, though iconography is very rare.
Pros - The Kingdom is not an evil organization, and it produces a large amount of food/grain for the general urban populations and the poor. It is also an organization that supports law and order, opposess tyrants, slavery, and the like. While sometimes seen as strict, almost anyone can request aid from the Kingdom and can reasonably expect something in exchange. It provides a basis for ethics and morals and stands as a bulwark against the forces of the infernal, as well as hostile forces like plains barbarians, and the Ogres of the Great Woses.
Cons - Being an organized religion, the Trinity is very fond of Thou Shall and Thou Shalt Not's. In some areas this can fall into a form of axiophilia, an excessive love of the letter of the law. I dont know if that is a real term, but if it isnt I claim it now. The Faith can also be slow to make decisions or actions, being a reactive organization, and since many positions, such as the Pontif, prelates of the Arms Militant, and the Arch-Bishops and cardinals are for life, there can be a lot of stagnation within the ranks. In the past, the Faith has also exhibited fits of intolerant violence, sometimes bordering on civil war. A final note, to the average commoner/PC the figures of the Trinity are distant and remote figures, well above the day to day concerns of the everyman.
The Via Mortus
Quite the opposite of the Kingdom, the Via Mortus is a large sect without any real sort of organization, and lacks any sort of over-god to guide it. The VM was originally more concerned with the disposition of the dead. In a setting where undead are not quite rare, this is as much a pragmatic concern as it is a spiritual one. Inspired by commercials for Incan paths of the dead (never watched the program) it mixes a good bit of mound building/ barrows and incense burning ancestor worship.
Pros - The figures of the VM, whose titles vary from region to region, town to town, are very reachable figures. Unlike the aloof bishops, the VM Caretakers, shaman, and Wise Folk are regularly seen consoling the berieved, the grieving. Other figures, such as VM exorcists wander from village to village casting out demons and banishing ghosts and the like.
Cons - With no organization, the VM doesnt have much to offer outside of counciling and funeral services, they also have no sort of political power in higher circles. With death being a common thread, not many of the VM clergy are seen as bright and shining figures, some do come across as morbid, creepy, or sick.
The Old Ways
The Old ways are a collection of fragmented faiths and pantheons. These range from cults based around stone monoliths, burning man cults, those who devote themselves to cyclical concepts, or who venerate lesser powers ala the Localized Paganism of Evolutionary Theology.
Pros - variety, variety, variety
Cons - After demons, The Old Ways are on the list of things to be squished by the Trinity. Old Way entities, demons and gods are fickle and are not 100% reliable.
