One of the bodies shuffled too close to Micky. She swung the wrench hard, the metal connecting with the side of it's face. Teeth crunched and were sent flying, along with some congealed blood and god only knows what else. She turned and kicked it square in the chest, sending it back away from her.  It's fingers raked at the leg of her flight suit a moment, almost dragging her off balance, but it's grip slipped.

In that moment Micky had jerked back in surprise. When the zombie lost it's grip Micky was sent crashing back to the ground. Breathing in short pants she rolled quickly to her feet. That wrench arching through the air, knocking back hands.

That fall had jarred her bones, causing her back to become sore. Watching the things make their way toward them. "RUN!" Grabbing his free hand. She wasnt going to leave him there alone to face those things. Heading down the corridor. If you moved quick enough yo could skirt around those things. Please god let them make it to the shuttle bay.

The flames sputtered, fatty tissue near the strike spot sizzled and caught fire. Hue's plan came to naught, the beam didnt generate enough spread out heat to ignite the bodies into a pillar of flame as he had hoped. A few scorched, and they were overwhelmed by the unpleasant scent of roasted human flesh. Even more disturbing was that the smell was vaguely reminiscent of Dean's Synth-sausage.

The doors to the hangar bay loomed ahead. Behind them, the shuffling host had grown to more than thirty staggering corpses. some looked disturbing...chewed.

Hue pushed Micky along infront of him, he dialed the plasma dialation to it's widest spread and fired again.  Not looking back he pushed Mickey into the bay and slammed the hangar door lock, it began grinding close.

He grabbed Micky's arm and ran over to the shuttle Ao and Severin were in, he pounded on the outter hatch, "Open up it's us Hue and Micky!"

Normaly she would have complained about being pushed and drug but offered no protest. "Ao, Severin, open the door! Please!"

Looking to the hangar door, watching the dead shuffle closer to them. How many would get through before the door shut? Her pulse racing. Growing fatigued despite the adrenaline coursing through her
system.

Speaking to her self in a very quick muffled tone. "Pleasepleasepleaseplease open up please." Fear gnawing at her stomach, making her queasy. She might have thrown up there but was able to swallow the bile back. Please dear god let them survive this.

Hue saw the door slowly closely took a kneeling firing position and opened on fire the floor before the door in the corridor. Plasma gun started to heat up under the continued strain.  As it heated he stopped the blast, and jury rigged the other three power packs to the gun set it to overload and threw at the zombies, and crouhed over Mickey infront of the docking hatch.

"Come on Ao, Severin.."  The make shift plasma bomb went off.

Watching Hue rig the gun and then toss it. When he crouched over her, shielding her, she realized what he had done to the gun. Cringing, attemtpting to make her self smaller.

And then the 'bomb' went off. Squeezing her eyes shut, she tensed up. Please let the explosion have taken out some of those things. Heaven help them.

After the thunderclap roar of the gun overloading, there was a long silence, only punctuated by the rhythmic tapping of a gutted light fixture swinging on a single fib-op line.

Tak tak tak tak

One of the corpses groaned, its body half charred and mutilated by the plasma flash. The air was thick with the scent of roast flesh, and the stomach churning smell of burnt hair and smoldering synth-cloth. A few of the corpses lay still, others began to struggle. Some pulled themselves forward, dragging behind half congealed, half frozen guts behind them. Others staggered forward on broken limbs.

*****
Ao and Severin heard none of the yelling, nor any of the banging on the bay door. They wouldnt have heard it even if the speakers weren't blasting the latest power ballad by Space Germ. Synth-steel reinforced blast doors were impervious to hard vacuum, and temperature changes of up to 500 degrees. A single human fist was nothing next to nothing.

The explosion of the power pistol was another matter. The feedback loop in the power cells generated a small EMP. Most ships were hardened against such accidents, so there was little effect. The music player skipped, and reset itself to the first track in it's memory, and archaic group named 'Alabama'...

Sweeeet Home Ala-bama!
I'm coming home to youuuuu!

The lights in the cavernous bay flickered as the power circuit was temporarily interrupted. The music played on, leaving the two space jocks to contemplate the source of the event. The hazard light near the north, or dorsal bay door blinked red...

Micky was shaking. Please god...what were they suppose to do? That smell, that awful smell. Her stomach grew uneasy. Bile rising, only to be forced back down. Looking back towards the direction where the explosion had taken place. Eyes widening in horror as several of the dead continued to shuffle forward despite damaged limbs and half spilled guts.

Knowing their pounding on the door had little effect. She looked to him. "Hue...what do we do? They cant hear us." Looking back towards the shambling bodies. They were slow moving, maybe they could force their way past them. But there was no way of knowing how many of those things were on board. "We have to do something...and we have to do it now."

Getting to her feet, helping Hue up. Trying to calm herself. Panicking only got you killed faster. One hand upon his arm, she was trying to come to a decision. Should they risk going after Pockets and the others? Doing so would probably get them killed. But they couldnt just leave them there. What if everyone but Ao, Severin Hue and herself were dead?

Hue's mind raced for a minute, God d**n those buffoons, if he ever got at of this alive he was going to throttle both of them.  He spied a hand grip for technians to get to one of the shuttle's stubby fuel wings.  Bingo!

"Micky see that hand hold up there, I'm going to give you a boost up then you can climb along those two hand holds and get on the wing.  I don't think those things can climb.  And we can get on the fusalage and wave into the cockpit at them get them to open the top hatch."  Hue cupped his hands together like a step to give her a hand up to the step.

Micky looked up to where Hue had indicated. "Yes, I see it." Listening as he explained the plan. Places her hands on his shoulders for support and balance she lifted and place her right foot up into his hands. Pushing her self up, reaching to grab onto the hand hold. Success.

Muscles strained momentarily as she pulled herself up and over to the wing. Once there she leaned down, bracing up against part of the wing. Stretching her hand down to him. He had helped her up, she could at least offer to do the same.

Thinking it over, it was doubtful that those things could climb. this whole mission had gone down hill so quickly. And it all started with core problems on the Bally. Was Taget responsible for that too? Would he have stooped so low? Or did Taget snap when he boarded the Celeste? Most likely they would never know. Micky wasnt sure that she would want to know.

Hue squatted then leapt up and seized Micky's hand and the handhold on the side of the ship, his military grade nerochem had been pumping away for a while and it finally kicked in with Micky's help he was able to scale along the hull and rest on the small wing with her.

He laid down for a second letting the nerochem dissapate, when his accelarated heart beat fell back with in normal range and he could speak without deapp breathes.

"Thanks."

Once he was up on the wing she issued a sigh of relief. Looking a bit worried as he laid down. "Hue? Are you alright?" Placing a hand lightly on his chest, feeling his pulse slowing to a normal rate. She looked to him when he spoke. A nod of her head given. "Not a problem." A hand for a hand almost.

Her attention shifted to the shuffling undead. Lord she hoped that they couldnt climb.  Micky looked back to Hue. "So, now to deal with Ao and Severin. " Curious as to what those two were up to. Surely the would have noticed the explosion. They should have noticed something. Unless they were caught up in their own hysteria.

After a minute or two she realized that her hand was still on him. Pulling her hand back slowly. Feeling a bit self concious. Thinking ~Jeez Micky, there are zombies stumbling about and your suddenly worried about what he might think. What is wrong with you? Hold yourself together. Stay focused. Dont die.~ Silently she scolded herself.

Hue felt mentally exhausted neurochem could increase synpapses fire, muscle density, heart rate, and lung size, yet it took a long time for it to flow through the bloodstream and the older you became the less efficient it became. Hue wasn't that old yet getting rid of the neurochem implant sounded like a good idea if he survied this. No he will and Micky.

She retracted her hand tentalively as she with a slight blush in her cheeks. Hue sat up and met Micky's eyes, he smiled.

"Let's see about getting into this ship then we can talk some more."

Hue crawled over the top of the ship, using a handhold that technicians use he hung his upper body infront of the cockpit and pounded on the transparent the broken bio scanner from his pocket.  There was no way they could have missed the sound and him.

Following him up onto the main body. Watching as Hue hung down in front of the cockpit and tapped against it with the bio scanner. Please let Ao and Severin be paying attention.  While she watched and waited, she could not help but wonder about Pockets and the others. Hoping that they were alright as well.

At least inside that little ship they would be safer, for a short time at least. Her muscles ached with fatigue. Eventually all of them would need some rest before they collapsed.

Her attention focused on two things. Making sure Hue didnt slip and fall. The second was watching the dead shuffling about. There was just something so eerie about that. So many dead things on board... what had killed them? A shudder went through her. One that Micky was unable to supress.

~Lord, if your watching. Please keep us safe. I'll do anything you ask if you help us survive this ordeal.~ A silent prayer to whatever god or gods might be listening.

Come on you two...open the door. Open. Open. Open, please. If someone had told her hours ago that she would be right here at this moment...trying to keep away from zombies in space....she would have laughed at the thought. Micky would have laughed at them. But now it was no joke. Those things shuffling around the ship were very much dead. Zombies. Even Marney had become one of those things. Poor Marney. All those poor souls.

"Hue, what if they are dead too?" The only reason she could think of for them not to respond. Not knowing that those two had loud music blaring from the speakers inside the ship. Reaching up she pressed a hand to her froehead. Knowing that her body would give out soon. The running and fighting and such was begining to take it;s toll.

The adrenaline that had been coursing through her system had become low. The body couldnt keep producing it at the moment. Micky was beginnng to feel alittle light headed. An idea hit her just then. The outside system board for the cockpit, it was up there by her.

Pressing along the metal until she felt this small panel give just alittle. Bingo. Now, how to get it open. Thinking. What could she use. Ah ha. Digging through her pockets until she came across her sunglasses. Bingo, the ear piece. Leaning down to get a closer look, she forced the ear piece carefully between the two panels and worked it like one would use a crow bar. Cursing when the first attempt snapped the piece.

Taking a few calming breaths she tried with the other piece. Clcik. Success! The panel lifted enough for her to get her fingers under it. Pulling it open. "Hue I have an idea. If I can figure which wire it is, perhaps I can over ride the cockpit door." It was an idea. Once opened they could climb inside and reclose the door from in there. She did it once before, back during the war. The ship she was pilotting had been shot down and she had been forced to steal another ship to get out of there.

Was it the blue or was it the green wire? She couldn't remember. Dang it Ao..Severin Open the hatch. Please.

With a pop and a hiss, the shuttle door cycled open, releasing the now grinding, ear splitting riffs of MegaHell SlutPuppy, a recent Martian band that specialized in using low frequency erxplosions in their music along with static pulses. It was all the rage on Mars and in the Belt colonies, but in the rest of the solar system it was considered obnoxious noise.

The shuttle was empty, and Micky was able to find the radio controls and shut down the sound system. Only then was she able to hear the shuttle's transciever.

Unidentified ship, this is Megaroad 9 Exodus, do you copy...
We received your distress call, please respond if you are recieving this message. We are not a rescue ship and are not equipped for salvage. We can take on survivors. Is anyone recieving this message?...

"Megaroad 9 Exodus, I hear you loud and clear." Looking to Hue. Thank god, a rescue ship. The music Ao and Severin had been listening to, no wonder they ahdnt responded. She then looked around. "Hue, where are they?" Knowing those two had been in the shuttle.

"We are aboard the Celeste. The other ship, danger. Stay away from it. Reactor is critical. I repeat the other ship is critical." Looking to hue. Should they go for the others? Or take this chance to get free?.

There would come no rescue.

The Ballard's auxilliary fissionable core continued to degrade until it slagged a hole in the aft of the ship. After forty years, the free-floating reactor began to cool and eventually fall dormant as its fuel rods were expended. The remaining portion of the Ballard was irradiated to the point that it would be considered unsalvagable.

The Megaroad 9 Exodus would continue on its transolar trajectory, meeting with the rest of the Megaroad fleet. After three months of preperation, the fleet embarked under superluminal propulsion for the first time.

The survivors of the Ballard perished one by one within the confines of the Celeste. It would be over a century before another ship would discover the vessel, and their story would become the basis of a lingering ghost story. A story of hopeless desperation, and of madness, and of a slow creeping death in space.
