Age of Rebirth
« on: August 17, 2005, 01:42:30 PM »
Once upon a time the verdant lands of this country were imbued magic and powerful sorcerors were commonplace. The ruins of the Great magical Countries dotted the land. Poor immitation crowns scrambled among those ruins. Giants and dragons still lived in the caves and mountains of the earth and goblins still stole children away from farmers on occasion. Pacts with demons, miraculous spells, startling transformations, and prophetic visions- these were the bread and butter of the sorcerous trade.

However this is not that time.

For ten centuries after the fall of The Empire and its strong laws (and sanitation systems), plagues choaked the very essence out of the land and people. The Order of St Martin turned to what we would call science to cure plagues. Many of the plagues and other suffering they encountered were sorcerously created. They used their influence to turn people and the Holy Church against the Black Arts. They pushed the Holy Church to create The Order of St Lionel,  an interrogative body with certain governing abilities in all the nations of the land.  Books were confiscated or burned, as were many wizards.

In time, though, all things are possible.

This is what is called on the streets the "Age of Rebirth". As population increased so did social organization and the rule of law over might. The sciences of medicine and industry are governed and practiced by guilds. Laws giving rights to even those without wealth and requiring trials are in affect in most situations, and even the common man can enjoy the same theatre as nobles (though in lower sections of the theatre). The Crowns of every nation begin to contend with the changes occuring from a wealthy skilled class. The Lionels uses their wealth, hoarded during the dark ages, as patronage for scientists, artists, and even the renamed Mystic Sciences.

Under the Holy Church's auspices, the Order of St Lionel enforces international holy laws governing magics. All Practioners must be licensced, with the conjures and knowledge they can practice limited by the level of their license. Certain feats of magic including invocation and curses are strictly illegal, but their place in the Arts has not diminished at all. Certainly the Crown of each nation has use for mages, even those considered Outlaw Sorcerers by the Holy Church. And in this age of Rennasaince who is to say what the limits are of what a man can accomplish?

I like the idea.  I think there's a strong theme of a society in transition, which has fascinating implications and possibilities.

It has a very 19th century feel to me for some reason.  Men running around in suits carrying wands, quick to defend the queen's honor and whatnot. I think perhaps it's because of the idea of science and magic combating and coexisting with each other.

Elizabethan England would be another time period that 'feels right'

Do you envision large 'nations' or more small 'city states' with a unifying religious organization?

I personally envisioned the political situation to something similiar to Europe between Nepolean and WWI period. We have five or six huge powers, with a few regions of small balkinized states.

In some ways it will be a combination of every conflict from the feudal period to early modern era. This is a period with four main conflicts

1) Wealth vs Class: The old psuedofeudal/ noble class system vs New ealth from the middle class.  In some places this conflict will resolve "neatly" as it did in Europe, while it could be "bad" like in Russia.

2) Church Infighting: There was no reformation here. There are a dozen or so Orders of the Holy Church fighting it out for their own piece of the power pie. Then the reformers will come into play.

3) Church and State conjoining: The various order have allied themselves with various states, dragging states into intercean conflict and various orders into nationalist conflicts.

4) States vs States: Old anamosities still boil. Alliances, counter alliances, and so on hold the status quo for now.

5) Technology (and magic) against the social structure. The new technologies (late renaissance) are helping to wedge change into a tradition bound world. Magic may actually be a stabilizing force here. The two (Technology and Arcane Science) will be slowly bubbling together, making for a low level mage-punk environment.

Any campaign could center on any one of these. If two or more slipped from the status quo at one time, it would be a huge war that would remake the world. (A future meta plot)

I was thinking about doing a world outline for this one.

Okay, this is where I will be putting all the additional information about this world. So if you read down the thread, you may see things suggested that are already incorporated into the worksheet. There should be an ongoing discussion on this setting following this post.

Themes and Images:
Images to go by, Early to Mid Renaissance for most things. I think military costuming should head more towards the Nepoleonic. We have moved away from the dreary and medieval and to the colorful. They have survived the plagues and now life is good.

We have a world in change. The game should always reflect that. It is currently in a precarious equilibrium. The background is in "flux" confusing.
