Mapping, Geography, and Geology

Isn't this title vague

I had a map, but it never scanned well. People asked me for it so they could have the place in their mind. I kept wondering why/ To be honest, the map is quite vague. There is a reason for that. I want you to fill it in. I want you to create your own cool Kerren Clusters and quirks of geography and insert them into the map.  

The map has SITEA, SITEB, and a few key historically and socially important clusters, as well as a few major features. It is like a World Map that shows New York, LA, London, Moscow, Rio, and Tokoyo. It show a few patrol ranges and common jump paths as well. It shows general ranges for Pointers, Southers, and other "regional culture groups".  To be honest, given the prevolence of flying and teleporting it kind of makes an "over view" map pretty pointless. The terrain Area Maps, showing a given place, might be important, but a world map... not really.

So you will build up your region of Kerren, where your people will be patrolling mostly. Clusters and Warrens are fairly fluid in their setup and continuance. There are a few clusters that have been abandoned over time, as well as a few Warrens that are no longer used. Given teleportation, a warren from far away could be assigned to patrol a given land.

For those of you that want to know:

The main continent looks a great deal like a right hand print with its thumb. (Pointers live on the "thumb"). The equator runs through the center of the palm. There are two other australian side continents, one to the south and east of the hand. One to the west. There is a trail of volcanic islands and a cluster of non volcanic islands between the hand and the Western Continent. These continents are not that far away from each other, as this worlds Pangea broke up fairly recently. (And the ending ice age which created all these deep valleys around the world just created a deeper ocean.

#70 Kerren Geography/ Geology
Kerren is a very young planet. Only recently, geologically speaking had its Pangea, its first land broken up into several smaller tetonic plates. This shifting has created a huge number of high mountain ridges (sharp without much errosion) with accompanying valleys. Since the mountains are fairly new, there will be volcanos that are active (but not explosive) and the moutain peaks will be very sharp, perhaps sharper than the Canadian Rockies. Volcanic activity is fairly common, as is fitting for a younger planet. The planetary temperature is fairly warm as a result of vented heat and atmospheric conditions.

It will have 3 continents fairly close together. Each of these will have several "folds" or sub plates moving at slightly slower plates. This should give each continent 1-4 ridge lines/ mountain ranges. The plates have not subducted, but have compressed and pushed up.

The world's pangea (super continent) recently (geologically speaking) broke up, so all the continents will be fairly close to each other. The world has a hydrographic percentage of 68, slightly less that Terra's 71%.

The Ocean is a huge affair with emense storms and winds. The seas between the continents are still fairly fierce, with strong winds and storms generated. These winds whip across the continents, channeled through valleys. They are just rediscovering wind powered seacraft, as an alternative to Dragon Flight. The increased distance is daunting to these people. the


As was stated before, Kerren has a 4 degree tilt. That is a little tilt. Consider it officially increased to 8%, less than quarter of Terras. Either way, Summer, Winter, Spring, and Fall all look pretty much alike. For some seasonal variations is the reason I want to increase the tilt to 8-12%. The other reason for this is that without tilt, there would be very little weather on the oceans, and thus even less weather on the surface.

What does this mean to you?
It means that the average Kerren lives on a mountain side with a valley below them. Most of these valleys have a river of some depth between them. It is usually fairly windy. Clouds and Storms are fairly common, more so in the summer months. There are occasional period of cold if there is notable volcanic activity somewhere on the world.

There are only four sites on the map that are set, the rest are up to the GM to fill out (if they wish). FirstDown (where the ship landed), FirstWard (the first Warren set up by First Down), Sitetwo (second colonial site, set up on other continent), Othersite (3rd colonial site, on another continent). Other than these and some mention of these, the GM can populate their Kerren as they wish. (I will give a list of example ward names, with wings associated with and their colors, so they can just populate the world).

General Planetology

Kerren is the common/ colonial name for Kerros IV. Kerros is a G3 star in Sector 460.

Kerren is a very young planet. Only recently, geologically speaking has its Pangea, its first land, broken up into several smaller tetonic plates forming three continents. This shifting has created a huge number of high mountain ridges with accompanying valleys. These mountains are notabily sharper than any Terran Mountain, even the Canadian Rockies.

Volcanic activity is fairly common on Kerren, as is fitting for a younger planet. The occasional venting is keeping the O2 level down to prevent firestorms prevolent in early biospheres. The planetary temperature is fairly warm as a result of vented heat and atmospheric conditions. The medium tempertures for Kerren are about 7F or 5C greater than Earth's at the same latitude and altitude (use spring and autumn to calculate temperatures). 

Kerren has a 8 degree tilt. That is a short tilt, less than one third of Terra's. Summer, Winter, Spring, and Fall all look pretty much alike. There is just enough tilt to generate some intersting weather.  Given the weaker electrosphere, there is more ionization producing greater electrical activity in the atmosphere.

The Main Continent (both the name and the descriptor) looks a great deal like a right hand print with its thumb.  Its land mass is 84,431.583 km² (36,220,545 mi²)- a bit larger than Terra's Africa, Europe, and Asia. The equator runs through the center of the palm. The thumb is called The Point, the home of the Pointers, is twice the landmass of Europe. The finger tips are deep ford like cuts, creating the Finger Seas. 

The Southern Continent 8,286,850 km² (3,767,250 mi²) is large, broad, and fairly flat. It was etched by the last Ice Age with huge rocky buttes and channel valleys. 

The Western Continent 7,686,850 km² (2,967,909 mi²) is a cluster of high plains, rocky ridges, and a number of rivers.

There is a trail of volcanic islands and a cluster of non volcanic islands between the hand and the Western Continent.
