Which Religion For You?
« Reply #25 on: April 12, 2005, 10:30:54 PM »
Threads can't be destroyed in the Tavern. It doesn't work that way.

Anyway...
I believe that what you said is true- Seeker really has no religion (at least, as Araith terms religion); he has beliefs about the world. You has been taught (and I'm speculating presumptuously here, correct me if I'm wrong) that a religion requires one single set of beliefs (a very Protestant thing to say, in my opinion).

But I (and Seeker, too) don't see it that way. Why is it that a person can't change? One's understanding of the universe can change. When you are young, you think of the world differently than when you are old.

I'm sorry... I'm not explaining myself very well, but I find it rigid and closed-minded of you to believe that a person can understand the universe only one way in their entire life.

Well, I do believe we see things a bit differently. When I say religion, I mean a set of beliefs, values, morals, etc. If you believe in what's current as I stated earlier, you have no 'real' set of beliefs, only what seems truest at the time.(Doesn't read right but I'm sticking with it...the truest thing. hehe.)

In a religion like I state, and I find no other definition about it than that or belief in a supernatural power, there are at least, a fundamental belief or value system, which his thought does not have. But this means simply he has no religion in this sense, but you could argue that continually changing is a fundamental belief, which is what I think he is getting at.

Can anyone ever really understand the universe? I think you mean Life...becasue universe incorporates something that simply can't really be understood.

With his ideas, it seems most logical that looking at history will get you the farthest in learning about what ever it is you are learning about. Because really, how much can you learn in a lifetime that someone in the past hasn't already thought of or figured out. And that won't get you anywhere because of the diversity of thought in the history of humanity.

And the reason I find this so repulsive is that it is simply...depressing, contradicting, and I said before, ludicrous.

Quote
We as individuals have no choices in life to make... we are but a single organic cell in the complexity of a living body... we are lone H2O molecules intertwined, bonding, connecting and repelling, flowing in the ocean currents.WE have as much choice and control in action, thought, and being- as a drop of water flowing down a mountain river has control/choice to dissent and flow upstream in accord to its own will.

If that is the truth, then why live? Why do 'anything'? And if you have no control over your thought...then what is this idea you've made, if what you say is true? This all seems self-contradicting. And offers no explanation about anything, and where did this idea come from, is it solely from you or is it an actual belief, that other people believe? It just doesn't make sense...it has no 'significance', is what I'm trying to say, it means nothing, even if it is true. So why would someone believe this?

Truth, in matters of religion, is simply the opinion that has survived.
-Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900)

Acceptance without proof is the fundamental characteristic of Western religion, rejection without proof is the fundamental characteristic of Western science.

I never said his beliefs, and I'm stressing that term "beliefs", were a religion. And I believe that on one point you are wrong- Buddhism has no "God" or even a concept of God, yet it is still a religion.

And as for your final paragraph... Why does life need meaning?
Now, I know that sounds stupid. It sounds stupid to me too.

In any case... I'm dropping this organization. I'm never entering this thread again. Why?
Because this is coming to nothing, and I'll never convince anybody, and I'm defending a point of view which I do not agree with.

Hehe, you shouldn't defend what you don't want to, I was just replying because he said he wanted feed back, if that's what all those big words meant hehe. And really I want to know more about it, because it sounds absurd based on what he posted, but I don't think it's 'as' crazy as I think it is, and if we were argueing about it, it would get nowhere, but I really want to know.

Sure, why not?
I see no evidence to suppose that there is some sort of vast cosmic entity watching over us.
I will admit that I said that fairly tongue-in-cheek in order to piss of Rei (mostly because the comment seemed very sanctimonious, and that irritates me), but at various times in my life I have considered myself an atheist, yes.

However, I would say that my general outlook on deities and such is agnostic- there may or may not be a God or Gods; if there are, great! If not, well, they weren't doing much anyway, were they?

It cannot be false... John Travolta is a scientologist... or whatever they call themselves... They worship Cthulhu in his sunken city of R'lyeh. The scientologists are in reality deep one cultists and deep one-human half breed.
