What DVDs/ Video are you watching
« on: March 23, 2005, 01:12:22 PM »
In the spirit of the "What are you reading" thread, it might be interesting as to find out what you are watching.  You can include the current rental if you must, but lets see what you are viewing.

There are three DVD (sets) that I am currently watching.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Homes (The last few episodes with Jerremy Brett)
3 disk set, with 6 episodes.

Gargoyles Season 1
Much animated goodness. One of the few series that can be called authentic American Anime.. or Anime in the American Style and no Japanese elements.  Much like the Batman Animates series, Batman Beyond, and the Justice League in art and quality, but better.

Spiderman: The Animated Series
This is the one from MTV. Picked up the last set of episodes I did not have.

Lawrence of Arabia, which I now have in DVD is awaiting some free time AND The Last Samurai is in a similar situation.

Let's see...

Serenity.  Nuff said.
The House on Haunted Hill.  I love Vincent Price.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Labyrinth
The original Star Wars Trilogy.  Not a big fan of eps 1-3.
Assorted anime; the list is far too long for me to go into.

And as soon as the Sony Corporation consents to release the d**n thing, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

What, you find a singing, dancing Gene Wilder and bad special effects more respectable than Johnny Depp and a set crew on acid?

Just got The Fog today.  The original version, which I saw and liked.  I don't know if that will apply to the remake or not.

Labrynth
Sky High
Kingdom of Heaven
Serenity
First season of Firefly
Rio Bravo (The Best Classic Western)

All four seasons of Rescue Heroes (Worthy for any parent of the under six crowd... get them today and teach your kids to be both safe and heroic).

Too much Thomas the Tank Engine (Again, for the under six crowd. Teaches life lessons WITHOUT being preachy. Just get your kids the movies and toys, you will need to do it anyways. If they are not your kids, get them for the parents).

Constantine: What a freaky cool idea. I am generally not a super fan of the religiously based movies but the ideas revolving around this one were just awesome. Loved the interaction between whatever Constantine was and his Priest that could 'hear' the demon plane or whatever the hell was going on there. The idea of the amulet of protection to save him from the voices and removing it to hear them, something Constantine couldn't do, was a cool symbiotic type thing. Got the ideas rolling about submissions of that type.

Rutger Hauer kick:
Omega Doom or Death or whatever. What utter crap....eeek. I can see the Matrix ripping off some of the looks of it though coincidently.

Blind Fury A blind guy that can fight better than many movie swordsman but can't kill a guy when it counts. Concept of the blind guy was pretty cool actually, enjoyed the very first scene when he kept 'accidently' kicking the asses of some bullies he got caught up in. Fun for the idea again.

Flesh and Blood Not a bad concept going on there if you can get past the bad acting. I like the idea of a medieval setting going through a holocaust of some sort, the plaque in this case, and creating voids of people so that a small band of bandits could actually take over a fortress. Got me thinking of that kind of setting, most of the power has been killed through whatever and now pretty much anarchy reigns with holds of 'good' around but many locations, towns, and castles could actually be reinhabited by the first ones that find it. Perhaps this could be the 'gold rush' of a far away land that discovers this place many years after the plague finishes. Now it is a massive influx of 'settlers' who are finding all these abandoned or poorly defended rich cities.....etc etc.

Triumph of the Dungeon Master!

Ah, how I have come to love that sense of accomplishment and victory that I get when I pull the wool over the eyes of a clever player character. What DM Triumphs have you had?

Some of mine:
1. Finally killing an incredibly powerful, lucky, annoying player's character.
2. Finally achieving a TPK (Total Party Kill)
3. Finally achieving a TPK using only traps
4. Finally working out how to make it so that d**n wizard doesn't steal the spotlight all the d**n time.

GO RENT "NIGHT WATCH" DVD NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Russia has finally managed to produce a supernatural thriller!!  :reddevil:

the story is cliche-ridden, the english dubbing sucks, but some of the concepts and visuals (like the were-owl and the abortion witch) are phenomenal!

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
uber-special effects, great 1950's sci-fi pulp motif; super science, giant robots, etc. Camera running gag made the movie worth the $7 I paid for it

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
Okay, so technically still in theaters, but a good movie, certainly better than 2Fast2Furious but not quite as good as the first one. Action was good, cars really looked awesome, the hybrid at the end stretched credibility (nissan engine in a 1960's mustang?) Being familiar with games like Need for Speed Underground I was not new to drift racing, but the movie makes it look so much cooler than the PS2 game does.

Agree with above:

My currents are all series and all cartoons.

The Speed Racer series (vol 1-4), which may not be worth it if you didn't see it when you were young.  This is one of the first Anime to escape Japan. It is messy and the animation is low grade by today's standards, but really a nice piece.

Avatar, Book of Water (I-IV). while still on TV, this allows you to see this wonderful work in order and its entirety.

Batman - The Animated Series.  This is the WB Batman that did all the ground work for all the other WB super series (like New Adventures of Superman Cartoon, Justice League, JLI, Static Shock, and a couple of others).  This series is actually credited by many comic writers as the main influence on their writing for the comic book.

The City of Lost Children - a French semi-horror/fantasy, starring Ron Perlman, of all people.  Imagine a movie not only made to be unique and weird, but made by someone profoundly more disturbed than Tim Burton.

The Producers - Really, both of them are good, but the remake was made to be much grander than the original and incorporate the stage production.  And the outtakes are hysterical.

The Masters of Horror collections - a series of one hour short horror films made by the horror greats (John Carpenter, etc).  Each dvd usually has two movies.
Sometimes angels fall from grace, and sometimes heroes die.
