I need your advice, o dice patron, how do you make the standard d20, d10, etc. and also rune dice (hail odin) out of wood.
The roleplaying games were never a danger.
Indeed, the only ones with real room to be
offended were pagans. As for me, I wish we druids could turn wood to gold. ;)

Good question

I am a woodworker myself and have yet to come up with an accurate method of achieving the complex angles ... I know there is a way as I have a wooden d14

My expertise is in finish carpentry and cabinet work ... so this is a bit out of my depth ... sorry I let you down

Anyone else out there have woodworking experience?

Another question. I noticed a few oriental dice on your site. I especially liked the dice that had only a single number transfered into kanji. Where can I find those? I would love to have a set of dice with the 1 a kanji symbol.

Thanks.

They are made by Koplow Games ... I tried GAMESTATION.NET but they dont seem to have any in stock at the moment ... Koplow does not sell retail so you have to go thru a vendor ... GAMESTATION should be able to order you some

Perhaps you haven't quite yet. Do you know how to make an even d6? I long ago read something about balancing it, but am not sure.

D6's are easy as they only require 90 degree cuts

If you assume uniform wood density then all that is needed is to cut accurately

Here are some built by me over the years (see top of page for wooden dice)

Yeah, how do you recommend measuring it and what to cut with?

Yeah, how do you recommend measuring it and what to cut with?
Measuring:

When I am trying to be very accurate ... I use a beam micrometer accurate down to 1/1000th of an inch

Otherwise I just use a t-square

Cutting:

I used to use a radial saw ... but I have found that both compound sliding miter and table saws to be more accurate

And when you design a new shape? I take it they're not wood, so what materials do you use?(and how?)

I use 100# cardboard ...

How is a bit harder ... the designs just come to me then I draw out the flattened shape ... print it out ... cut it out then assemble

Here are some examples ...

It depends on which die you are looking for ... Most of the Tobacco dice are quite rare ... all of them ... I acquired on ebay

LOL ... 1969 Playboys are worth between $6 and $50 (depending on who you talk to)

The Jon Weber Manufactory set is worth that by itself :)

All together (without looking it up) I estimate the the cost I paid for the entire Tobacco Dice collection to be between $200 and $250 ... but since I dont sell dice ... even my duplicates ... the point is kind of moot

Here are the highlights of the dice added in May 2006

EVENTS OF PARTICULAR NOTE:
==========================

I finally acquired a set of what I think to be mercury tappers (See Below) ... At least they perform just like I have heard tappers perform ... that is ... face the number you desire to roll up ... then tap the die on a hard surface ... then roll the die ... and it comes up the chosen number a majority of the time

DICE OF PARTICULAR NOTE:
========================

CHESSEX supplied me with a large number of dice this month

REFERENCE PACKS
---------------
...2005-06 OPAQUE & TRANSLUCENT
...2005-2006 SPECKLED
...2006 KEEPING IN STOCK
...2006 SIGNATURE
...DISCONTINUED
...GEMINI

CUSTOM DICE
-----------
...GENCON 2005 (amazing detail)
...Custom die made for me
...Eiffel Tower d10
...Weather Die
...I have no idea what THIS die is

CRYSTAL CASTE has a new line of "Treasure Chest" dice

...D20'S
...D12'S
...D10'S
...D8'S
...D6'S
...D4'S

GAMESTATION is now making SICHERMAN DICE for more on what these are CLICK HERE
... I also added their OLD ENGLISH Dice this month

Added the KOPLOW SPINDOWN DICE

I believe these to be MERCURY TAPPERS

THIS is a interesting die ... I am told it shows the 5 elements of Taoism

... 4 faces of the dice show animals :
...... The Dragon represents scaled animals
...... The Tiger represents furred animals
...... The Turtle represents shelled animals
...... The Bird represents feathers animals

... 1 face represent the Fith animal, the MAN.
... The last face of the dice is a flower and represents the vegetal world (but doesn’t belong to taoism theory)

... They are all connected to one of the 5 elements of Taoism:

...... Bird / Fire / Summer
...... Man / Earth / between Summer and Fall
...... Tiger / Metal / Fall
...... Turtle / Water / Winter
...... Dragon / Wood / Spring

... Thanks ... Romain Soulie of Shanghai for this explanation

Added a set of Mint condition black casino dice ... I have wanted a set of these for a while ... They are typically used for reserved games (private) and are rare ... but these are generic ... so they are not so rare

Finally got ahold of a set of Craig Heinze's MICKEY MOUSE DICE

THEME Changes (Updated/Added) as a result of adding new dice:

I've been thinking about getting a set of the dice made of actual bone recently. I've read a couple bad reviews on them about the numbers being hard to read and the dice just being of poor quality. Do you have an opinion of these dice? http://www.rpgshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=36295&
