The World of Orbis
« on: January 18, 2005, 10:25:20 AM »
Magic in Orbis is concentrated around the "ley lines" which run from the core of the planet around the globe. When directly upon a ley line, all *good* spells such as healing and *neutral* spells such as building things cause no penalty to the spellcaster. So the major cities are not just near rivers, but are on top of ley lines as well. A piece of land with a ley line running through it is far more exspensive to buy. Ley lines are found with an enchanted piece of soft bendy wood that bends when over a ley line. *Bad* spells cast over a ley line can cause earthquakes or can make magicaly-made buidings fall apart or even vanish.Building spells only last for any length of time when upon a ley line.

The further away from a ley line, the more likely the caster is to feel sick when a spell is cast.Depending on the fitness and will of the caster, the preperations for the spell eg prayers, and the size of the spell, the consquences can range from no bad effect, all the way to death, as the spell takes energy from the caster. Some necromancers can take energy from other people, but such a thing is both illegal and will make the caster seriously unpopular.

White Magic, includes all the healing spells and all the spells that do great good to people. White wizards and witches are the doctors, lawyers, judges, city mayors, and most high ranking jobs are held by well-trained White mages, who are held in high esteem in society generally.

Grey Magic is all the spells which neither heal nor harm.Building spells are ranked "grey" as are spells to point one's way ect. Crystal ball magic is also grey.

Black Magic includes the necromantic arts as well as all spells that only cause harm. Black Mages/Witches are outlawed and persecuted unless there is a war and they agree to join the army.

Vallermoore

One of the largest countries in Orbis is that of Vallermoore. In the early years it was occupied by several wandering tribes, who often warred with each other and were too divided to threaten their neighbours. It was King Snefru who managed by force of personality and by new battle tattics to enable his tribe to subdue or force out the other tribes, and it was he who had Vallermoore City built upon a ley line. When he died Queen Yocasta took over. Pier Point was taken over with very little killing...it had been in decline for a long while as trade went elsewhere to city-states such as Karnivhal, and could not maintian more then a token army.

Next Yocasta's troops marched on Barrowtown, but made the cardinal sin of trying to plunder some of the older royal barrows, the places where dead kings, queens, and tribal leaders of the past were buried. The wights tore most of the army apart and the invasion failed. A decade later Yocasta threatened Vandersil with invasion unless it allowed itself to be annexed. King Lariton gave in and was made to live in Vallermoore with his daughter,Princess Amber.

When Princess Chrysta, Yocasta's only child, died, Yocasta went insane and her ministers forced other girls to pretend to be her. Amber had taken on  the role but was uncovered. Her father was killed in front of her but she was able to escape to Vandersil, where she and a resistance movement took back the city, then invaded Vallermoore.Yocasta's policies had made her deeply unpopular and she was killed in battle.Amber now rules as Queen.

Barrowtown
« Reply #2 on: January 21, 2005, 03:34:46 PM »
Barrowtown grew up amongst the barrows which were the tombs of the great nobles of the past. It was started by refugees fleeing tribal warfare, but soon became much more then a mere refugee camp. They found gold in the mountians, and although they never became very powerful, Barrowtown became a good place to live.

When Queen Yocasta invaded it they tried plundering the barrows on the way and were driven off or eaten by wights. Those in the town who commit murder ,treason, arson, or who keep on committing petty thefts, are tied up and fed to the wights who like the taste of human flesh. Crime is therefore low, which attracts many merchants to the area, upon which Barrowtown depends.

It is considered unwise to venture upon the Barrow-Downs after sunset, although the wights stay out of the town itself.
