Some of the small arms weilded by the armies of WWII
Great Britian:
9mm browning Hi-power pistol created by john moses browning of the 1911 fame
9mm sten machinegun- a cheaply made submachinegun, using stamped parts and a funky side mounted magazine
Enfield bolt action rifle- the standard infantry rifle for GB throughout WWII fired the .303 enfeild cartridge( ballistically similiar to american .30-06)
Vickers machinegun- essentially a maxim watercooled machinegun chambered in .303 brit
bren general purpose machinegun- a bulky, though reliable machinegun with a 30 round top fed magazine also chambered in .303brit
U.S.
1911 pistol the old standby, in .45ACP
U.S. rifle M1 chambered in 30-06. generally known as the Garand,uses an eight round clip, At the time the garand entered service the US was the only country to issue a semi-automatic rifle, all other countries used bolt-actions.
M1903 springfield This was the main service rifle of WWI and was issued to millions of us troops at the beginning of WWII as the garand wasnt produced in large enough quantities to met the demand. The 03 was based on the german mauser action and fired the .30-06 cartridge. used throughout the war as a designated marksman rifle
Thompson submachinegun bought in small quantities by the us gov't they were very expensive to produce, the later a2 version was much simplified and a bit cheaper, they most thompsons were later replaced with the greasegun
M3 greasegun used similiar production techniques as the british sten gun , it was produced in great numbers cheaply by the GM headlamp division and cost about a tenth what the thompson did to produce, fired the .45ACP round though could be fitted with a mod to fire captured german 9mm rounds
M1 carbine created as an interrim weapon for NCO's and non combat personell to replace the M1 garand and the 1911 pistol, the weapon fired the .30 cal carbine round
Germany:
98k the standard germany infantry rifle, the 98k fired the 8mm mauser cartridge and was a bolt action. principally produced by mauser at the oberndorf plant.
luger pistol a 9mm pistol usually issued to officers, tankers and artillerymen
MP-40 schmeisser a 9mm submachinegun produced from all metal stamped parts. said to be very dependable and accurate.
sturmgewehr "storm rifle" the first assault rifle, produced in small number and firing the 8mm kurz , intermediate round.
