Wanted: Cyborg troopers to protect dormant life-forms...
« on: November 14, 2004, 09:46:27 PM »
Ship Six is a Penguin RP. Before we get started, here's the rules:

1. My word is LAW!
2. Absolutely NO MUNCHKINISM!
-Munchkinism is hereby defined as: Power-gaming, god-moding, playing a sorceror character (especially since there are no sorcerers in space), and/or controlling/killing off/otherwise affecting mine or others' NPCs without permission.
3. I want to keep this moving so it won't stagnate and die. If you don't post for five days, we'll go on without you, unless you provide a decent reason for not posting.
4. See Rule #1.
5. Also, follow all rules not hereby outlined that are outlined in the Freeform Rules in the regular Freeform board.
6. Please no smilies or chatspeak in the roleplay thread.

Without further ado...
The Story
The Ship isn't working anymore.
25,000 civilians, 10,000 officials and officers, the 10-man strong Council. They are in a frozen cryo-sleep. 325 years ago, they left Earth, fleeing the growing deserts and frozen wastelands, the undefensible radiation of the Sun and the final gasps of human civilization on the Homeworld. Their vessel was the Ship, Ship Six of twenty, and for 500 years they were to be frozen, awaiting their arrival at a new home. Their caretakers were the three AIs, Pericles, Eteocles, and Thais.
Among the foodstuffs, oxygen, technology, and other random et ceteras of the cargo, there lay a secret, one that only the brass had access to: 10 cyborg battleroids.

But all is not well.

It is the 325th year of a 500 year journey, and there is a problem.
For hundreds of years, science-fiction writers have predicted Humanity's triumphant first meeting with outsiders. How ironic, then, that Ship Six, the first Human craft to encounter aliens, is found dark and malfunctioning by the attacking Szchra.
The Szchra have found things in Ship Six as they have been for several decades: Lightless, mostly cold, abandoned. The AIs provide no contest, lurking in frozen datanets. Are they dormant or awake?
The Szchra approach vast banks of frozen humans. There is no answer.
It's a big Ship, tunneled out of a vast asteroid taken from the Belt, outfitted with a FTL drive. The Szchra aren't done exploring.

Guess who's awake? Deep in the cargo-caverns, 10 cybernetic cryo-coffins crack open. The ice begins to melt, steam is released. 10 cyborg battleroids, man/machines, trained for battle, enter the first stages of low consciousness.
The heroes awaken like zombies. Which, really, they are- 340 years ago, the fresh corpses of soldiers in the long wars were gathered. Microchips and instigators were integrated into their brains. Their skeletons and muscles were cyberneticized, their organs vitalized and boosted with Carbon-20 nanomachines. Other processes were included- no time for that now.
Something has activated their awakening sequence.

10 cyborgs, resurrected warriors of long-dead (or, at least, long frozen) Human civilization. They are the hope of Ship Six. They must stop the Szchra and find the AIs. They must set things right in Ship Six. Perhaps, they will unravel some of the mysteries, and recover their lost memories in the process.

There is more than meets the eye in Ship Six...
------------------------------------------------------------*

The heroes are each one of the 10 cyborg battleroids, cybernetic warriors created for battle. Something on Ship Six has activated their awakening sequence, and it couldn't happen at a better time, for three reasons:
1. The AIs are gone. Where are Pericles, Eteocles, and Thais?
2. An alien race, the Szchra, have invaded the Ship, and have begun to explore. In some of the outer Sectors, they have awakened and enslaved the bewildered Human colonists, who were formerly in cryogenic sleep.
3. Deprived of it's controlling AIs, and without humans to work it, Ship Six is ceasing to function. The defense shields have dropped, and the engines have powered down.

Your character is to be one of the battleroids. Each battleroid is a cyborg warrior (once a human corpse). They are somewhat unstable, but they are also very powerful. They sometimes experience echoes of their former lives in the form of flashbacks and hallucinations. They are prone to mental instability. They are also encased in powered armor, called a coffin-suit, which surrounds their cybernetically-maintained bodies. Each battleroid has an identifier, which may or may not be their name from before their death.
I'm flexible, though. If you don't want to play a cyborg killing machine with semi-amnesia, you could, conceivably, play one of the confused Human colonists who have been awakened too early out of cryostasis by the Szchra. You are exhausted and weak, sick from cryofluid in your organs (the Szchra can't work the technology properly, so you weren't well flushed), and confused. You are probably lost in the darkened hallways, or captured by the Szchra for study, disection, and slave labor.
Your character write-up will be on this thread. I need name (or identifier, if you are a battleroid), age (not including years in cryostasis), and possible skills and specialties. If you are a Human and not a battleroid, make sure to include a background. Battleroids, your background might be revealed to you as you play, or it may remain a mystery.

So... Uh... Now accepting player requests.

Wanted: Cyborg troopers to protect dormant life-forms...
« Reply #1 on: November 15, 2004, 07:01:38 AM »
Name: Soldier Number 7
Former Rank: Captain
Former Occupation: Command of special forces battlearmor company
Program Entry: Death in service fighting in New Panama City against insurgents. Body recovered by team and returned to base for proper burial. Captain was signed into cyborg program, his body was prepped and was used for Soldier 7.
Psychological Profile: Stable compared to most cyborgs. Still retains memory phantoms focused on previous life (prime subject wife and daughter) Reconditioning focused on protection of said phantom subjects by Soldier 7 as dictated by battlecomp implanted in torso.
Skills: Aside from standard combat protocols, Soldier 7 has moderate computer skill, as well as specialization in energetic weapons as well as the previously unknown nanite shift*

Nanite Shift: This is a recent discovery that is still being explored, only two cyborgs have demonstrated the ability, and both manifest it in a semi-conscious manner. The nanites in the cyborg body 'attack' a manifested portion of the body, and once the old form is gone, they reform into a new portion. During Training Exercise 55302-A, Soldier 7 'decomposed' an ineffective arm mounted light laser, and 'grew' a medium action machine gun in its place. Soldier 7 scavenged ammunition from fallen rebels and used it in the gun. During debreifing, and downloading, the cyborg repeated failed to demonstrate how it effected the nanite shift.
Sub-note: afforementioned nanite shift took six hours to effect

Name:Soldier 4 TRX-13 Model(Shade)
Former Rank:Major
Former Occupation: Mars Specialist and Sniper for the DRS, or Denmark Resistance Soldiers. Fought SAA(South American Allegiance) Soldiers of the Primal Region area and was shot once in the throat from a plasma laser, making damage primarily burns of the trachea. Body recovered and sent to the Cyborg Program on Earth as a gift from the DRS to strength their alliance with the U.S.
Psychological Profile:The most unstable of the ten, but will follow orders. Retains vivid memories of his neice and only daughter, unknown to the others, and of his death in which he sometimes relives. He is most connected with humanistic feelings and emotions, and is quick to kill when needed and later, investigate.
Skills:Implanted into his brain is many Martial Arts Skills, primarily Jujitsu. A chip in which loaded it all into his cybernetic mind and sends messages to nerves throughout all the body. He also is familiar with all types of firearms.
Weapons:A Special Automatic TIR Plasma Rifle. Able to fire rapid successions of Plasma. The magnazines are made of a silcon metal that his heated up enough to hold the plasma.
Facts:Best in combat in a small group of people, in where he will most likely be the sniper.
BodyIn the coffin suit, his to recgnize him to humans is a black metallic suit in which his helmet is a large visor where he an pick up infered and night vision. In order for him to use his martial arts, his suit is a very special flexible armour, a little weaker then the others.

Regeneration:Able to regenerate missing body parts due to small nanomachines in which they rebuild the dead cells and flesh, usually a fast process, it has made him the TRX-13 Model and with his skills. But due to his harsh mental instability he has a hard time regenerating
Takes about five minutes to grow back a limb, and less then two for something smaller.
Electromagnetic Pulse Destroyer:Able to connect to a machine and add enough power into it to destory it. Basically like a lightning storm strikes a machine it blows up. Same here, enough electircity to render any machine useless and if in Cyborg warfare, use it against other cyborgs if it touches the cyborg.

Name: Soldier 2 / Infiltrator TRX-277
Former Rank: Colonel
Former Occupation: Paramilitary Operations / Intelligence

Psychological Profile: Cold, calculating, extremely deadly. Carries out orders with precision and deadly accuracy. Haunted by memories of past life (To be reveled in game) , Soldier 2's loyalty is questionable at times.
Skills: Hand to hand combat specialist, Computer expert, Psychological warfare training.
History: Classified

Cybernetic Construct: Unlike most other cyborgs who average 40% to 60% organic, Soldier 2 is only 12% organic, composing of the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord. The balance of the body is composed of ferro-ceramic 'bones' and a stressed skin shell of tantalum carbide graphite. The hands, and feet possess special cores made of superconducting magnets that allow the cyborg to climb vertical and even upside down in the manner of a fly on the wall. The cores are supplemented by micro-sized tantalum barbs that allow the cyborg to adhere to non-metallic surfaces with only moderately less force. The 227 is also signifigantly smaller than standard cyborgs and is capable of navigating much smaller spaces and access ways closed to larger cyborgs.

Scras, Jinx, you guys look good. Sent, want to put more detail into that?

Note that a somewhat-more rapid regeneration is a characteristic of all battleroids, due to the malleable nature of their component nanites. This may also have something to do with the aforementioned nanite shift phenomenon.

Battleroids can assumed to be wearing a ferro-ceramic battle armor suit (the coffin-suit), fashioned with compartments which may contain template blocks for projectile weapons (such weapons contain cybernetic template stamps, so that the weapon effectively makes it's own ammo from a template block), energy clips for masers, plasma incitors (like an energy clip for a plasma-based weapon), scouting tools (binoculars, range-finders, arc-calculators, laser-sights, communication beams) and personal equipment that the battleroid may have taken with them when they were frozen for the journey on Ship Six.
Humans can be assumed to possess a skintight stasis-suit and one hell of a headache.

Identifier: Soldier Number 3 (A.K.A. Shine)

Former Rank: 3*9ap3935- Data error -

Former Occupation: Command of front-wave strike team (reference under NAH-USA Joint Operations Squadrons {Type C Training, Squadrons 1-15})

Program Entry: During the European Union invasion of New York City, subject was killed by numerous loose-shrapnel shots, which damaged surface tissues and rendered the left arm unusable. The collected body was registered for the Cyborg Program, and the subject was prepped for use in the construction of Soldier Number 3.

Psychological Profile: Numerous shrapnel shards in cerebral matter made the use of a larger number of microchips (Type 7A, with Type Alpha instigators) necessary for reconstruction of mental functions. Subject shows a marked tendency towards hallucination (Subject has reported the appearance of imaginary creatures, movement, and memory phantoms identified as brother, sister, and squadmate, respectively.), and slight manic-depressive cycles, generally too slight to be noticeable. Subject is otherwise psychologically stable. Subject shows little memory-retention beyond aforementioned hallucinations.

Skills: Aptitude in projectile weapons and standard military tactics, as well as stealth operations. Subject shows an unwillingness to use energetic or plasma-based weaponry, stating a (probably pre-death) belief that they are "unreliable". Subject is moderately ambidextrous due to fully-cybernetic nature of the left arm.

Neither of those are going to work, Luke and Phoren. Phoren, you're going to need more detail, and battleroids were made only from the bodies of soldiers so that training could be minimized. Luke, James Bond died about one-hundred years before the Cyborg Project, and so was not eligible.

Here is just alittle info about the metal 277 is constructed out of. I chose it do to it's properties and that it is a real metal. *
That and there are two Soldier 2s. There is "Shine" and the "Infiltrator TRX-277". Just wanted to let you know Captain Penguin. :)

"Scientists at Los Alamos have produced a tantalum carbide graphite composite material, which is said to be one of the hardest materials ever made. The compound has a melting point of 3738oC. Tantalum is used to make electrolytic capacitors and vacuum furnace parts, which account for about 60% of its use. The metal is also widely used to fabricate chemical process equipment, nuclear reactors, aircraft, and missile parts. Tantalum is completely immune to body liquids and is a nonirritating material. It has, therefore, found wide use in making surgical appliances. Tantalum oxide is used to make special glass with high index of refraction for camera lenses. The metal has many other uses.'

The material surprised me. I thought it was made up since there is a critter in the Dungeon Master's Guide Expansion X called a Tantala (Tantalum - see?) and the addition of Carbide Graphite at the end.

Carbide - carbon
graphite - carbon

From a chemistry standpoint it seemed a oddball, or jumbled tech-talk.

Honestly, I just put what i found about the metal. And most sites I found mentioned tantalum carbide graphite.
But I can understand where one might think it was something a made up.
A shame I dont have any Dungeon books. I have some VtM and two Exalted books.

Bam, Shine is now Soldier 3.

The thing, Sentinel, is that your character is antisocial and murderous, and is able to use all types of firearms. Maybe, just maybe it would be possible, and I'll allow it, but that doesn't mean you can just pick up any weapon and blast with it. You're familiar, but not an expert, okay?
Oh, and a Plasma weapon and Laser weapon are not the same thing- Plasma weapons fire hyperheated gas, and Laser weapons utilize light, and in any case, Lasers are improbable. This setting uses Masers, which is like the same thing, but it's a microwave.

Luke- I guess I'll allow it, but careful there.

Phoren- Still no.

Oh, and this is to all of you- I know you want your characters to be "special", but try to resist the temptation to tack on stuff like "TX-3ZR Special Unit" or something like that. Technically, each battleroid is unique, so each battleroid is a special unit.

Identifier: Soldier 9 (A.K.A Enigma)
Former Rank: N/A - Spec. Ops.

Former Occupation: International Infiltration and Extermination. Former servant of the world, not a country. // Threat Neutralisation //

Program Entry: Due to unforseeable circumstances, subject was eradicated by a single bullet, which entered the lower jaw and fragmented. Subject died of blood loss. Due to the brain bieng relatively undamaged, the body was able to be preserved for use in the Cyborg Program. Subject is marked as Soldier Number 9.

Psychological Profile: Subject is relatively stable. Due to the nature of his former life, there is few emotional connections holding him back. He had no children and no spouse. Occasionally, his mind appears to revert to the instance of his death, wherein he will feel intense 'ghost' pain in the area of his jaw. Subject is mute, and is unable to communicate verbally barring raw vocal exhertions. He is still able to communicate through gestures, however, and is versed in battle-gestures and morse coding.

Skills: Subject is efficient in dispatching single targets. His weakness lies in multiple foes who are aware of his presence. As such, he is skilled in the art of stealth, silent moving and silent killing. #9 uses darkness whenever possible. He is moderately skilled in the use of firearms - though he is unable to utilise Masers and Plasma weapons to good effect. The Subject prefers to use silent, bladed projectiles instead. He is efficient in throwing small bladed weapons such as daggers and due to cybernetic modifications, is able to use these to great effect.

Cybernetic Modifications: Due to the nature of Soldier number 9's skills, several Cybernetic modifications were installed. Within his retinas, nanobots reside, constantly adjusting his pupils to the optimum flex to allow him to see more efficiently in darkness. This is in the chance that the visual aid of his helm is removed or disabled.
Additional nerve and pressure adjustments to the palms of his hands and fingers allow Subject 9 to determine the weight and balance of any small item he holds. As such, he is able to throw small projectiles much more accurately - even projectiles he's never seen or touched before.

Alright, people, some things to clear up...

I intended the humans and battleroids to have only projectile weapons. But since you took that into your own hands, I'll stick with it. But there is one thing I will not allow, which I just noticed- the Maser Sword. Sorry, Luke.
Another thing- since we've already got plasma weapons ([scoff]would never work in real life[/scoff]) and Masers, we'll stick with them, but they are going to break, be warned, and they will malfunction.

There are functional AI, faster than light spaceships, and cybonetic organizms that sound like mechanized zombies, but there are no energy weapons? Why not?

If I need to go back and change 7's armament, I will. I majorly doubt that primary defence forces are going to be armed with experimental or tempermental weaponry.

Even if there are energy weapons in existence in this universe, it doesnt mean that these battleroids will be issued and equipped with them.

Here are a couple reasons why I think that this scenario may not have such energy weapons:

too inefficient - For the immense cost of keeping and maintaining these sophisticated weapons, it is much more efficient simply to use the current, less energy-draining and economically unsound, Masers and projectile weapons. After all, these weapons can kill any humanly known hostile organism anyway. Why bother with overkill, when its just as effective placing one bullet in a sabatuers head or what-not?

Too Dangerous - As you may remember, there are many thousands upon thousands of humans in this ship, and as such it is essential that they remain safe and alive. The intense heat and raw power of such energy weapons may tear through the metal hull of the ship.
A misfire with bullets is no large deal. A misfire with a steel-rending laser weapon may cause a rupture in the hull.

We're buried in an asteroid ship this ship is monsterous huge shadow, it's unlikely any man portable weapon would penetrate the ships armor.  Besides ththe starting weapons aren't the only weapons, the ship must have hundreds of weapons lockers for when the colonist finally have reach where their going.  I mean when has man colonized anywhere peacefuly?

Hey, hey, let's not get carried away- all I said was that I wasn't going to allow the Maser Sword. You can keep the rest. I grudgingly accept them.

Oh, and Sentinel, the aliens aren't "down the hall". The "crate room" is one section of a vast cavern in the center of the asteroid (Ship Six) in which cargo is kept.
