After conversing with several non-americans, both here in the Citadel (props to Mike and Ancient) as well as in person, I think Strolens comment is quite valid.
America, however, is NOT a democracy. This is a common misperception. Given that each state has electoral votes, and the entire system of the Electoral College makes America a republic...not a democracy.
Given the political power and influence of Religious groups in the US (One of the reasons our forefathers brought about the division of church and state) has made the land of the free not so free. Sure, we can still express ourselves, but only so long as we dont offend. We can express our love and affection only as long as it is deemed publicly acceptable (IE heterosexual) The list goes on and on. One man I knew, Polish BTW, said that America reminded him more of 18th century England when the country was dominated by Victorian puritan morals rather than the 'Land of the Free'
...I am ranting now, and I hate to rant but sometimes stuff just has to be said I guess.
