I've been looking at some sites about the game Kult...
*shudders*
Now I'm afraid.

Anybody ever played that? I'm suddenly interested, despite also being horribly disturbed by it.

Well, the basic idea is that God (the Demiurge) has abandoned the Universe, and as a result, the world has gone insane. Humans who have Awakened can enter the insanity that remains.
Some examples-
Paradise still exists, but some of it was destroyed, and other parts have been burned by an arsonist angel. The burned corpses of angels who died were never cleaned up, and still lie rotting in the halls. The angels who remain, free of the rule of God, have gone insane, and demand worship from the souls who dwell in Paradise.

You mean to tell me that someone else out there has actually heard of Kult? I thought I had the only copy in existance (exaggeration)

No one in my old game group wanted to play that game, they were scared of it. Found in a game store used book bin for $5. Heh heh.

Well, here it is a nutshell.

God has gone AWOL. Human beings were once divine, outshining even the Angels. But we have been humbled, and locked into a huge overwhelming prison ala the Matrix, but instead of machines and computers, it is our preception of reality.

With God missing, angels and demons are misbehaving and the borders between our prison, and the 'real world' are breaking down. The nasties and horribles who really hate us for being superior are sneaking in and out, killing, raping, destroying and we are left, pants around our ankles starting to realize that somehow, something isnt right.

PS - the devil has gone AWOL also, as his existance is based in the opposition of God, and with no God, there is no Devil.

Another example-
Without Satan around to oversee Hell, all the punishments don't make sense. Punishment used to fit the crime- if you were greedy and stingy, you boiled in a lake of molten gold, et cetera, et cetera. There is no longer any order in Hell, so the greedy might, say, be forced to eat tons and tons of hot sand each day, instead. Which is worse is up to you to decide, but the ultimate point is that Hell is now not only a punishment, but a senseless, unfair punishment, a punishment that has nothing to do with the crime.

This game sounds a bit over the edge. (Yeah, I know the thread has been dead for four years, but my friend Yahoo Spider found it and I had to look).

Anyone ever played it?

Yes. It is totally strange and very Kafka-esk.  It is tightly genre driven, so it is a freaky world where everything that is real is totally horrific and mundanity is a total illusion, to enslave all beings.

Unless you are all on the same surreal page, it is a tough game to digest.

So why wasn't this in a place where I would normally see it?

I've got the book. uber-twisted.

Everything you know is wrong sorta thing, sorta like the Matrix meets the Omen, meets Call of Cthulu

I have played several games of KULT actually, if this is your cup of tea, you're gonna love it. I have had players that have bailed out because of the weirdness of it though. I won't mention session examples as they are explicit in their examples. A must try for veteran GM's that enjoy bizarre settings.
