Quest: The Fortold Power
« on: August 31, 2004, 11:42:14 AM »
OK, This I going to be a game run under a medieval D&D style story system. I will DM the game and will determine the outcome of all situations and encounters. There will be no limit to the number of people who can play, nor will there be any limit to when players are allowed to join, but aside from the opening sequences, if you wish to join, you will need to PM me with your character and I will find a suitable place to insert your character.

Be forewarned that my Magic system may be different than what others are used to. For example, I see no reason why a wizard or mage could not cast a healing spell. If they can call down rain from heaven, and turn themselves invisible, and transform into another animal, then I see no reason why healing is out of their capabilities. So just be forewarned about that. I will handle problems as they arise.

No character should be significantly stronger or more powerful than a very skilled Human. I am going to assume that each character will be experts in their fields, but not so much that a human expert in their own field should not be able to match you. Limit your character to reason.

I am expecting to post about every three to five days. No sooner, no later. If I cannot make a deadline, I will try to tell you in advance with my apologies.

As for the actual rulings, I am going to reserve the right to countermand your post if I have reason to. I will PM you first so that you have a chance to edit it yourself, and after that, I will simply make whatever changes need to be made. If there is any issue about a ruling, about having to be absent, or about anything else that I should be informed of, please PM me, don’t do OOC stuff for an issue not involving everybody else. We will work it out privately and maturely. My actual decisions on everything will always have a realistic reason behind them, but it is not unknown for me to make mistakes. If you believe I have not taken something into account, you can feel free to PM me anytime about it. Sometimes however, I might not always be able to give you the reason why something did not turn out to your liking because there is something that you do not know yet. If this is so, I will tell you.

Aside from all that, All I ask is that everybody try to make the character they have interesting. Vary it a little. Not everybody should be a wizard with an ornately designed cloak with grey eyes that give him a mysterious appearance. Everybody should not be an elf with long black hair that goes down to their waist and shimmers in the night, who has gold colored eyes and a graceful yet confident stride who carries a bow made of pure silver and gemstones. Try to make your character stand out a bit. It is always more interesting when there is a group of unique individuals. Be different.

You can choose from any race you want, including half-races and undiscovered ones. You can have any profession you want to have, and excel in anything you want to do, so feel free to stick out a little. Remember that a good blacksmith with only moderate combat skills can be far more useful than any fighter or battle-mage. A healer with almost no ability to fight is often the most useful character in a group. And by doing that, it allows for ebb and flow within battle, instead of “everybody goes and kills a bunch of stuff. Now other players need to protect another person instead of themselves.

Anyway, this first post is just setting things up for the actual story. I am going to let everybody digest this and think about what angle they want to come in from for this post. Anybody who wants to can feel free to post a character sheet, but only say what one would notice from the first few encounters. I would much rather that you reveal the true depth of your character in bits and pieces, and through actions, rather than a character sheet.

Alright, that’s all, and I look fore ward to a good time.

Hey guys. I am going to discontinue this thread for a while just because i am really not going to be able to devote the time needed. If it had been a thread with people in it, i would have gone the extra mile, but since there is no loss in dropping it now, i am going to have to for the time being.

I will pull it all back in later when i have the time again

Yeah ok. But don't make too big a deal out of this or i may start to get excited and possibly even creative.

Akuma, it is ok to have a bad guy character, but keep in mind that he needs to be able to remain within the general party most of the time. I don't want you going out of your way to make him too evil. All we need is for somebody to choose a monk and then im gonna have to off one of you. i would of course give you a new character, but you and i both know how attached you can get to a PC.

Still, have fun with it. I think an evil character is a good idea, but make sure he does not outstep his bounds either.

If you guys could give me a PM with a very primitive outline of your character so that i can backlog some plotline for both of you (basically i am looking for initial appearance, race, alignment, religion, and the top two or three things that drive your character to live) that would be great. Also, feel free to hook some other people. The more the merrier. If i get too many people, i will just spread it out a bit into more than one party.

The Council of Mages, Terra Sul, Osven:

Speaker 1: I have called this meeting because I have felt a great shift in the force of the world. Something big is happening or is about to happen that will change the world for the worse, although, I cannot tell what.
Speaker 2: Are you sure? How do you know.
Speaker 1: I am sure. Something will happen soon, if it has not happened already. I cannot explain how I know, but…
Speaker 2: Let us ask the mirror of sight.
Speaker 3: Are you sure? You know the cost of asking the mirror of an answer
Speaker 2: Yes I am sure. This is a needed risk that I must take. We must know if the world is truly in danger.
A large veiled mirror was brought into the room minutes later by an assistant. The veil was pulled off of the large, round mirror, of what looked to be cheap construction. The speaker looked into the mirror and said only “what future awaits the worldâ€?.
At first there was nothing. A moment. Another moment still. A golden thread of light started to trace itself around the speaker’s reflection. As it slowly traced itself around the reflection, that part of the reflection began fading from view. The reflection of the man was almost gone by the time the golden tread finished tracing what was once the speaker’s reflection.
It held for a moment as all that remained in the mirror, save for the outline, was the room and those behind the man, as if the speaker were not even there. Suddenly a flash of gold lit the room. A glimmer of light came across the mirror and the reflection faded. A new image immersed itself into the front. Aside from the human shaped outline of gold in the center, the scene would be easy to mistake for a real reflection.
The scene became a great battle. Armored soldiers lined the fields, battle mages throwing spells into the battlefield. Souls, like golden figures of light, could be seen wisked away from the battlefield. Then the scene changed to a village set in flames. A great building sat in the center of the town lit on fire. Hundreds of souls could be seen flushing from the building. A small ship could be seen in the backround escaping into the sea. The ship was of the making of Terra Sul.
The scene changed again to a city. The place was hardly a city, more like a ruins. They watched as armed men marched through the street and killed a man dying of mal-nutrition. They watched as the soldiers ripped a gold pendant from his neck, a pendant worn only by those of the Mages council.
Then the scene faded and the room returned to clear view again.
Speaker 4: Even if he is right, we do not even know what is going to happen, what hope can we have of preventing it?
Speaker 5: We could ask the Oracle.
Speaker 4: The Oracle!! I would entrust my life to my assassin before her word. You know that she is dangerous.
Speaker 2: And expensive…But we may have no other choice. We have no other way of learning of what danger looms over us by any other device. Not even The Mirror can give us any specific knowledge.
The Archmage could not help but notice that everybody was glancing at the mirror. He knew what they were looking at. He looked down at his lap. His hand had faded from reality. It would be sitting in the reflection of the mirror.
Archmage: It must be done. There is no other choice. Send Yavven to ask the oracle. I feel that he may be more important to us than would be obvious. I feel he has some deeper role in this.
His arm was now gone, and his legs and feet were fading quickly. To him it felt as if some terrible cold was covering them. In a minute or so he would be completely gone. He had been lost in the Mirror before, but that was when he had been stronger and more capable. He  had no certainty that he would return this time.
Archmage: Have him sent at once. I would like to be alone now.
With that, the archmage left the room. In his private quarters he looked over all of his personal possessions for possibly the last time. He was looking over the letter of his daughter, who he had not seen for 26 years because of his work, as his reflection in the Mirror, still sitting in the counsil room, finished reappearing and then faded from view….

Woodland Path, Rasta Province, Osven Continent

It was a cold, clear, night out. The stars could be clearly seen in the black, night sky. The light pounding of hooves could be heard on the ground as the horses trotted along the earthen path.

Saundra Followed Gregory, her newly hired escort, along the night path on a black horse. His reputation had proceeded him. He was one of the few great Adventurers left in Osven after the Blood Plague. He wore standard Adventururs weaponry, including a long sword and and a large shield. Other than that, she had no clue what weapons or armor he wore. Most of it was concealed under a long brown cape.

His personality was rather grating to her. He was a very brass, cocky individual who she would not believe to be a competant Adventurer if not for his reputation. She still could not believe how difficult a time she had getting him to leave before eating his food. He really had put up quite a fuss.

Gregory turned off of the path in the woods. The horses trotted through the thick forest floor for about ten minutes before gregory gave the signal for them to stop. They were still in the woods, next to a tall hill, around which opened up a small clearing. A small brook could be heard trickling not far off, but more notably was the snap and crack of an unseen campfire lying around the hill. Gregory held his hand over his mouth, signalling silence, and got off of the horse. Saundra followed suit and got off her horse as quietly as possible while Gregory slowlly moved up to her.

"Stay Here" He said, before turning and making his way slowly and silently around the hill.

Curiousity was eating at Saundra like the plague. She had to see what was going on. Against orders, she too walked slowly sideways. Around the hill, but farther back from Gregory. As she made her ways sideways, the picture before her became clearer. Six green, humanoid creatures sat around a compfire eating fish. The Duchess-in-waiting had read about them before. If she remembered correctly, they were called Troglodytes. The did not seem aware of Saundra's or Gregory's presence, who had gone around the hill, and had a bow and arrow drawn and was in the process of aiming.

Saundra was still moving sideways to get a better view when her foot went farther down than she had expected. She stumbled and fell to the ground, snapping twigs and rustling leaves on the forest floor. All of the Troglodytes reacted quickly, standing up with pole-arms drawnand ready.

"Dang" Gregory said as he realized what happened.

The arrow flew from his bow, striking one of the troglodytes in the head. The Troglodyte fell to the ground dead. The others did not wait any longer. They charged towards the woods with weapons ready. Gregory dropped his bow and drew his sword and shield, running out into their path as they approached.

Five-on-one did not look like good odds from Saundra's point of view, but there was nothing that she could do to help.

OOC: A lot of information that i give will will be in the form of a PM to the people in the thread. I am hoping that by doing this that i will be able to create a more fluid and interesting story, not only for the players, but for any person who wants to watch.

Anyway, I will post about once a week. Make sure to read your PM's for extra information. Lets get started.

Azriel had been following them. Having been hired by Viceroy Adrien Borras to hunt and track this women, though Azriel found it boring and dull, he did it nonetheless with all his skill, staying silent and in the shadows of the woods and staing low as always. He had studied her escort for a very long time as well, Gregory, for he had soon found out the name of her escort, was an adept swordsmen for he carried himself that way, but Azriel hadn't been able to pick up on Gregory's style of combat. If battle came to it, Azriel didn't make an illusion that he could kill the man, the escort was an expert at his job.

As they came to the hill he went deeper into the woods. As he watched with silent amusment and watching the Trorglodytes despairingly. He edged closer and stopped hiding behind a tree. Saundra was only three feet infront of him and with a practiced throw could kill her with ease. But he dared not.

He wore all black, hoping to use it as cover. Azriel wore a black tunic with it's sleeves ripped and showing his muscle-coiled arms. He had a large black cloak that enveloped his small form and hiding two slightly curved short swords at his side. He had as well a hidden dagger at his ankle and a knife in a sheath on the back of his black pants. Azriel wore special black boots that had no soles to cover sound. He had under the tunic, an almost lightless silver chainmail armour, that would protect partly from long range attacks.

He moved his white hair out of his eyes and kept the hood in place to cover his luminous green eyes. His black skin kept him hidden as the battle raged on. The escort was doing well, but loosing the battle, the Troglodytes were wearing him out. They would do better if they wared themselves out, but killed the escort and then he could kill them easily and with ease. He watched and waited for this.

His eyes soon wavered down to Saundra. She did nothing, but watch, and that irritated Azriel somewhat. Just like a Highborn to think themselves too important to try to save the life on another, but Azriel knew, if he was in her position, he would do just the same.

Akuma had been semi-hunting minitaurs across the plains of Sudan. Well not really hunting the minitaurs but following them so that he might be able to spot those really hunting them.
I was the first real job in months, hunting these pochers, Akuma was determined to catch at least a few of them to turn into his empolyer. Unfortunately he had not spotted any yet. Most of the days were uneverntful: follow mintaurs, eat, take care of sark, set a fireless camp, repeate the next day.

Camp-grounds, Rasta Province, Osven Continent

Gregory

It was only moments before Gregory had stepped out that three troglodyutes were on him. To his dissatisfaction, the other two had decided to go around and attack the girl. They must have seen the blue robe that she was wearing and taken her for a mage.

This was going to make things harder because he had to act quickly now. Before, he could have held them at distance long enough to take them out one by one, but if they were going to attack the girl, then he had to finish this battle much more quickly, and much more decisively.

The first three reached him at aproximately the same time, all lunging at Gregory with bladed spears. Gregory reacted quickly. His sword came up to perry the second troglodtes spear, and brought it down trapped against Gregory's leg, while he lunged at the first of the three with his shield up.  The third spear only grazed his right side, causing no damage to him or his armor, while  the sheild took the brunt of the first oncoming spear as well as the face of the first troglodyte. The first troglodyte was sent to the ground with one swift motion. With an upswing of his sword, he cut through the rib cage of the middle troglodyte, causing it to fall back shrieking in inhuman pain. The third troglodyte glanced ever so slightly at what had just transpired, just long enough to see a flash of silver before his head was indefinately separated from his body.

All of it happened to Gregory in some sort of heightened awareness where time slowed down, much like combat had always seemed to him. All of the events of the last two kills had taken place before the first troglodyte had even hit the ground and as the first Troglodyte landed, Gregory was already spun around and after the other two, who were now all too close to Saundra. Saundra, to Gregory's dismay, was frozen still, and had not moved a single inch since his arrow had let fly. He had to take out both of the creatures before either reached the girl, or else he would find her on the wrong end of a spear....

Azriel cursed Gregory for his stupidity as he quickly unsheathed his knives. They were slightly curved, and the steel was heated black with a razor edge. The blades had seen blood too many times as it had a very light red tint to it. Azriel flashed past Saundra pushing her into the bushes and standing before the troglodytes bravely as they charged forward. The first one saught to bring his spear into Azriel's gut, but Azriel was quiet faster, as he glanced past the spear and slammed his knife into the back of the troglogytes skull.

He let go of it as a spear head came an inch from meeting in his chest. His hands caught hold of the shaft as he used the inertia from the troglodyte and lashed his feet out into the face of the troglodyte. As the troglodye went down, Azreil landed in a crouch with the troglodytes spear in his hands. He stood up fully and came at the troglodyte as it started to come up. There was a great spill of blood over the ground as the troglodytes head left its neck and landed rolling to the feet of Gregory.

Azriel dropped the spear and came over to his weapons, cleaning them and sheathing them as he looked over to Saundra, he had thrown her to the ground to get her out of the way a little too roughly and she was dazed against the tree that Azriel had been hiding. Azriel sighed and turned around to face Gregory, ready if anything went ill.

Gregory had gone four paces before he saw one of the Troglodytes fall down to the ground, and six paces before both were down. The head of one of the troglodytes landed at his feet, and his eyes were still adjusting to the dark forest scenery before he barely saw a shadow near Saundra. He resolved quickly that he would have to trust this figure for the moment as his body weight shifted sideways, allowing a spear head to be thrust just right of himself by the last remaining troglodyte, who he had only knocked down.

It was less than fifteen seconds before he had won the duel with the troglodyte, who was good, but still not in Gregory's league. As Gregory turned to meet this dark figure, he noticed that Saundra was nowhere to be had. With sword and shield drawn, he approached the dark figure, his eyes still scanning for Saundra. It was only a moment before he noticed her lying on the ground, unconcious or dead. He hoped that it was the former.

"Do not move stranger. If you do, you shall not live to see daybreak. Tell me what has happened to her, who you are, and what you are doing here, and do so quickly, or else our blades shall meet this very moment."

Gregory awaited the dark figure's response. The man's prescence here was unexpected to Gregory. This man could have just been here at the right place at the wrong time, or more likely, the man was following them for some reason...

Azriel smirked as he shrugged and leaned on one foot, in a stance if attacked he could easily repel and counterattack. He glanced slightly over to Saundra, she would be out for a while, until then he could make up a lie for the escort and flourish it a little." I have been chasing the troglodytes for some time now. As you may know, the troglodytes were part of a larger raid who had attacked a village. The villagers fought bravely and repelled the attack. They sent me, their finest warrior, to despatch the rest of them and give them vengeance."

There. The story had came to his mind and believably coming out of his mouth fluently. Now, he would have to see if Gregory had passed for it. Azriel, having served as an assassin for years, knew the arts of deception very well and he doubted Gregory's ability to detect the lie.

Azriel glanced back at Saundra and rolled his eyes that were unseen to Gregory. He had used a little too much strength at throwing her to the ground to protect her and he didn't want this escort to go into a rage for her and it leading to further bloodshed." I threw her to the ground a little too roughly. Fortuneately, she is only dazed and will be out of it in a few moments."
