You know there are stellar maps, ones that you can get the actual location of the stars in the Milky Way. It includes the size and brighness of said stars so you can have a realistic galexy. You just need to insert if their is a habital planet or colony or station, and go from there. It could save you a great deal of work.
Tri-Tac's FTL 2448 had a map for our part of the milky way, you might be able to crib from that.
