Oldthings
« on: April 05, 2004, 05:25:10 AM »
or this really is a science fantasy world.....

OldThing was originally the slang word, but has come to be the
official" word for things from the Days of the Ship. This is EarthTech. While the Preserver beliefs prevented them from bringing the higher end of Earth Technology (Nano-Tech, Teleporter, VR Spectrums, PlasmaMotors, etc), there were still pieces of higher technology that were "acceptable".  While the Colonists did not think they were going to rely on said items, they would be handy to "fall back upon".

Since Kerren has fewer accessible resources than expected, the daily technology is now what the original colonists forsaw. The colonists carefully stashed OldThings away for future needs.

There are still a few items, salvaged from the ship, still in daily use.  Windows from the ship, a few doors, and bulkheads are found in a number of Warrens.  Smaller, personal items, also exist.  They are passed down through family lines over the years.

OldThing the players could encounter examples:

The Computer is the only piece of OldThing that is used on a regular basis. It is still at FirstDown, near the PrimeWarren. It makes projections of weather, keeps track of warrens/ populations/ goods, and helps people design things. The system is activated once or twice a week, depending on the weather and the local fauna.

It is also linked to the SpaceTrackingSystem. Randomly, the system is booted up and a scan is taken.  It can not be kept running, as it will attract every saurian and draconian in the world, and given its power level.. it will drive them all insane.

At the PrimeWarren there is a cache of laser rifles, and a few other "personal" weapons. There is supposed to be one operating hopper left, but there is no one who could fly it (perhaps someone could learn with the Computer's help).  It is said that this arsenal also has a number of lower earth tech weapons that came from one of the original colonist's personal collection.  This collection is said to be enough to arm several wings.

Sitebee has a medical area that has OldThing equipment. While the Healers are there and practicing standard Kerren medicine, they occasionally fire up an imager or a growth modifier to help a patient who they can not easily help.

Alderon Warren is lit internally by Oldthing lights.  They are non electric, so they do not attact saurians or draconians.

I have probably read this 5 times thinking each time I would come up with some more old technology that maybe went missing in the crash that could be refound or perhaps some small things that others brought with them that were kept secret.

I really love this idea. But whenever I sit down to think of something....I can't.

I have the same problem.  I keep thinking that there are tons of things that people have squirreled away.  Given the general rule of, save something you might need later, but can live without today, and can't repair it, people would hide any number of little and big things.  Yet, I keep trying to come up with these things and I too draw a blank.

Some of these caches might have been forgotten. This allows some deux ex machina in the campaign. "Someone stumbles over a lost cache and..... "

More Oldthings?

I am not sure if you are open for suggestions anymore, but hey.

Oldthings

Combat suits- Not designed too protect the wearer from claws, sword and other physical "weapons". But made too block beamers, laser and other Oldthing weapons. But it could be handy since it has movement detectors,
heatvision, and a data analyser in the helmets visir.
The data analyser when in combat modus keeps tracking different movements in front of you. And describing them.

Example.

Tracking--Tracking--SpottedMammal-----Class14oo0025Kerren37--

If this is hard to imagine or if I did not describe it well enough, then think of the Terminator movies. When we see trough the eyes of a Terminator.

The Combatsuit regulates heat, air and keeps track of your heartbeat and bodyfunctions.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beamers- Not like a laser rifle, but a small beamer that resembles a flashlight. It is not for long distances. You can select the size of the beam.
It is for cutting trough things and helps speed up manuel work with metals and such. But it could be a useful close combat weapon since the beam is powerfull enough to melt trough a meter of iron in a second(when the beam is on maximum).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Toilets- Yeah, yeah laugh it out all of ye. But these are not toilets as we know them. I am thinking of small steel cylinders which burns the excrements at once their inside. When the Sh*t is burned the energies from it is stored and used the next time someone uses it.

*The combat suit has one of these installed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In addition there could be plenty of tools to add. Different machines like Captains CleanBot, Digging machines, refriguators, coolers, maybe some kind of cryosleep thing.

Was also thinking about a workdroid. maybe it does not have a mind of its own but needs to be "driven" like a car. With hands, and feet. designed to carry heavy stuff.

A skeleton walks into a bar and ask the Bartender: “Do you serve skeletons here?”

Times being what they are the wily Bartender replies: “sure, we serve anyone.”

The skeleton hands the man a silver and says: “Fine, I’ll have a pitcher of beer…and a mop”

Phoren:

The people here didn't crash, they landed. Of course, they didn't know about the dinosaurs and the zhan (or dragons for that matter) at the time. They didn't have enough fuel to go anywhere else and the planet was habitable.

Okay, so there was the first plague, which was a mutated flu bug that was pretty nasty. That killed off most of their much older, less athletic members of the colony, but pretty much they know where everyone is/ was and where they were living. (I mean the computer still functions, they keep records on it and check the records for useful solutions to technical issues every now and again).

So why would there have been a supply depot, built up in the middle of nowhere? If it had been a hoover accident, would not a century or three of dragon fly overs with the GPS tracker or scanners have found it? (of course electrical tools would attract animals... so it is not something to do casually).

Old things are actually items from High Tech Earth or Really Early (first couple of months) in the Colonization when they were transitioning from Earth Tech to Sustainable Tech.

So there are some Laser Rifles  and Laser Shields in an armory at SITEAA. There are still radios for emergencies in most Warrens. There is a surgery suite somewhere that uses EarthTech. Some portable scanners are out there. There is a closet with spacefields (forcefield spacesuits) for people and a few adapted ones for dragons hiding away. They have the "in the minds of the first colonists" some plans for some "easy to make" vehicles and tools of higher technology than they would normally use, for "rainy days". And a couple of other useful things cached away for emergencies.

(All the hovers are destroyed after decades of use and encounters with Zhan and Dinsoaurs. The Dragons took over all flight, as Zeplins were just too darn slow and too easy of a target without a dragon escort.)

So there are some OldThings still in common use. Holoportraits of first families and Earth. Clocks (most of which were adjusted to Kerren Time). An alcohol powered chain saw. Some power tools. Some unbreakable windows (taken from the Space Ship). Deckplates were used as doors. Tubes taken from the ship are used as plumbing and solar heating tubes in many older sites. And old Hover airframe is being used as a cable tram. And so on.

The Kerrenese were all about rejecting Earth's nano-tech driven computerized society for a simple sustainable economy and technology that respects the environment. But they didn't throw all of it away. They were idealists, not stupid. They didn't bring anything really dangerous to Kerren. The other things were to be phased out as the colony aged, with locally made things. They just didn't know the planet was really metal poor and had huge mega-fauna that were attracted to electromagnetic signals (kind of like those put out by motors, electronics in operation, and radios). So things did not go like planned.  They were expecting a society akin to the late 18th century, they got an exotic world with no analog.
