My taste varies and I have not had much time recently....
« Reply #50 on: April 23, 2003, 06:23:26 AM »
I love my two young boys (7 months and 22 months) but they do suck up both time and attention.  The last few books I have read.

Wheel of Time: Excellent Series. I am currently on Hiatus from the series having read the first six in a row.

I reread all of Asimov Robot and Robot Detective Series.  Facinating things.  Hmmm. Gollum are the fantasy equivalent of robots... maybe someone thought of a spell to make them quickly and cheaply... hmmmm.

The Mercedes Lacky series of Diana Trigard (Horror Investigation... top knotch), and the Arrow set for the Umpteenth time (Predictable but still fun).  I have the new Skiff book and wanted to read those so I can have the right time and place in my mind.

I have been reading a lot of Comic Trade Paperbacks. Don't have the time to properly collect anymore, so I have been reading them compilations.

I have also been reading books on writing novels and writing mysteries... we will see where that takes me.

I love seeing new stuff that I have never thought to try before. Am I that out touch for never reading Lackey?

Arrow set?  Lackey?

Whenever I am at a lost I just take a look here and decide what to try next.

Am reading the Sherlock Holmes two book set I have at the moment. Sign of Four would make a perfect little side trek mystery. Thinking how to work it without outright plagarism for a plot.

Mercedes Lackey is a very prolific fantasy novelist.  She is begining to reach towards Asimov's total books.

Check!!!

To the top of my list. May even order them before exams are over with the expectation that they won't arrive for another week. Gotta finish Holmes first though.

has any one ever read the "Sword of Shannara" series?   the Author escapes me at teh moment.  The first was pretty muc\hc a knock off of "The Hobbit" but the later ones get much better and more original!

No, I haven't gotten that yet.  No realiable bookstore here, and I'm broke when I go home.  Will see if I can find it over the summer.

Terry brooks I should have known that; I started with reading his book
" The Tangle Box" and truthfully didn't care much for it.  My friend told me to try reading his other series and I really enjoyed it.  I haven't got to finish the entire series yet so that is what I am planning on this summer.

We-e-e-ellity wellity wellity, Terry Brooks.

I find his books to be uninteresting and often quite unimaginative. Some of them are okay, but on the overall they have a way of getting on my nerves.

I didn't want to immediately chime in my dislike of Brooks either.

I don't like his style at all and found it more annoying then anything else. I read them once when I was a lot younger and then, remembering that I liked it, went back and tried to read them a few years ago and couldn't force myself to finish the first book in the Shannara series. And that is bad when I won't finish a book. I will generally power through most anything because I hate only half reading books.

I like the first three Shanara(sp) books. However, every set after that is a rehash of the first three with the serial numbers only partially filed off.  And his other works have the same feel, though they are well done.

I am only occasionally annoyed by Mercede Lackey's continued use of the "comming of age" storylines. However, she at least has very different characters in very different situations every time. Something that Terry Brooks could learn.

I saw the movie Re-Animator the other night.  While the movie was mediocre at best, I now have the strange urge to read H.P. Lovecraft.

I've read a number of Terry Brooks Shannarra books and likewise got bored quick with them. The lead character spends 80% of the book denying the obvious role fate has handed them before blasting whatever they were fated to blast into oblivion.

On a slightly similar note, Orson Scott Card's Ender series. Read only the first one! Ender's Game. Excellent book, great reading. But, after that, Card apparently spent all the proceeds on many, many drugs and the rest of them are utter garbage. Avoid them unless you want a good book to fall asleep to. Chrisitan aliens. Ye Gods.
After a brief retirement while I got married and traveled the country, I'm back. Just getting back into the swing of things for now, but gearing up to hit things up like I used to.

I love the movie Fight Club so had to try the book by Chuck Palahniuk. I think having seen the movie made the book that much better because I could hear Edward Norton narrate the sections of the book. It actually follows it pretty good up till the end. Great book if you liked the movie a lot. If the movie was just ok then don't bother.

Liked that so tried Survivor and Invisible Monsters. Survivor was pretty good but Invisible Monsters was suffering just for a twist at the end that, by then, you didn't care about. Only a few hundred pages each so didn't waste but a few hours thank goodness.

White Noise by Don Delillo was pretty entertaining and depressing and cynical. Trying to get into the contemporary fiction stuff that I have never read. Just got to be picky. Now I am reading a historical book on pirates. H'aaarrrrrr.

Phantoms by Dean Koontz.  What if all those mythologies featuring demons and devils had a real life inspiration?  And what if it's still around?

The Trickster Author escapes me at the moment.  Pretty good horror story loosely based on American Indian mythology.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen  Reading the graphic novels right now.  It's a lot different from the movie, a lot darker.  They really toned it down.

I went into Barnes and Noble the other day looking for the "lost swords" trilogies, but they were out of print. Anyone recall those?

I seem to be leaning more towards sci fi lately, as I'm also looking for a copy of "Mona Lisa Overdrive" to read and have cravings to read the Ringworld series and Man-Kzin Wars and Bolo Novels. Maybe I should get a pet shark and put a fr!cking laser beam on his head...

AGAR:

I saw Mona Lisa Overdrive in one of the book stores on Castro Street in Mountain View CA.  I think it was Booksellers, the large used bookstore... across and down the street from East West.

Ria:

If you are reading the original League of Ext, then you are reading some very great comic book.  All the fans of the original series hated the movie with a passion.  They took characters that were originally true to their books and messed with them so they are almost not recognizable.

Well, right now I am reading a fantasy book called "The Riddle of the Wren" by Charles de Lint. The ideas and storyline in the book actually remind me alot of the rping that goes on here! It's a very good and interesting book, needless to say. Other books I like are:

-Harry Potter series (especially # 4) by J.K. Rowling
-Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
-The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
-The Legend of Lady Ilena by Patricia Malone
-A College of Magics by Caroline Stevermer
-Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
-Elske by Cynthia Voigt

I am also writing a book myself and in my opinion, it's interesting. It is a fantasy book but I don't want to release any information about it for fear of theft. Sorry! You'll just have to wait till it gets published!

I just finished reading the Moreau Omnibus by S Andrew Swann.

It is a big paperback that combines the first three stand alone books in the Moreau series (all that are written at the moment):
  Forests of the Night
  Emperors of the Twilight
              and
  Specters of the Dawn

Cool reads. Science Fiction in a cyberpunk vein, without all the damm cyberware and net running.
