Lately I've been reading the extremely good "Song of Ice and Fire" series. It's fantastic!

I agree that harry potter books make wizards look bad.

I have just finished reading 'I Robot' which is a pretty good book and hopefully I'll read the other two books in the robot series in the near future.

In accordance to the Harry Potter series I feel that I must first state that I understand your point.  However, as I work with many children I have seen the affect that this particular series has on children.  This series was not written for most avid fantasy readers; it is more like a bridge between contemporary realism and fantasy.  I have wittnessed many children begin with this series and then while waiting for the next enstalment pick up another fantasy book and read it.  I know of one girl in the seventh grade who after reading this series has began reading Anne McCafferty's Dragons of Pern, and another who has picked up the Narnia series, and yet another who is currently reading Paloni's Eragon.  I believe that children need these bridges to enter into the world that is fantasy. These books are meant to merely excite children enough to want to continue to read, and trust me to get a child to read anything these days is a miricle all its own.

Disagree with what? that Harry Potter doesn't open a new world of reading for todays youth? what planet have you been stuck on? I said that this series should not be recomended for the more avid fantasy reader, but it does gently allow a child to discover the great world that is fantasy, and it does push them into reading better more complex books.  Though I am inclined to disagree with you Cap'n let it be known that I respect you opinion as i would anyone elses who disagreed with my own! ( The freind that is looking over my shoulder right now said that I sounded a bit pushy! )

Don't say "hate"!
It's too strong a word to apply to such a menial topic.

I've thought about reading Interview With A Vampire. I think I will. But first, I must finish Clan of the Cave Bear.

Harry Potter. Hmmm. Haven't read them. I am currently reading The Hobbit to my 4 year old son and he is really enjoying it and asks a lot of questions. I was thinking of starting Harry Potter afterwards.

I think Harry Potter has its place. I equate it to the Dragonlance Series way back when with Raistlin and Tanis and all the favorites. I LOVED those books when I first read them over 12 years ago or so. I tried to read them again 2 years ago and I couldn't. I have been exposed to so much excellent fantasy and SF since then that it was painful to read and I dumped them. The Shannarra series too. That SUCKS!!! But when I first read it I was mesmorized.

I will probably like Harry Potter from the view that it is a child's book. I pretty much agree with Adel on this one. Any books that get them reading is good. Any books that get them reading fantasy are better.

Clan of the Cave Bear was good. Plains of Passage Or Mammoth Hunters or whatever the next book was called...probably drops a rating or two. I remember being bored and skipping many many pages to get through it. Good ending but it drags in the middle. Don't dogear all the graphic parts Cap'n. ;)

Actually, it has been proven that children who are obsessive readers suffer socially in the long run.

@!#$ that noise!
Yes, my reading screwed me up in elementary school, but I'm fine now, okay? Fine!
Reading makes you more intelligent, increases your vocabulary, and is kick-ass.

Clan of the Cave Bear...I don't know if I like the author's style. It seems boring and bad to me. Ugh. Ugh. *Begins to shudder* It's begun! I don't like the book anymore! Ack! Aaaagh!

Quote from: "Strolen"
I will probably like Harry Potter from the view that it is a child's book.

Well, I have to disagree in this point! The first two or maybe even three books are for children, but the fourth and the fifth are definitely not! The cruelty which is described in these books is nothing for little children. I wouldn't allow my children to read them before they're twelve years old. Or even a bit older. It's not only the cruelty, it's confusing and hard to understand, too. Those things with the ministry and everything. I had to read one chapter of the fourth book twice 'cause I didn't get what the facts were. Well, I first read the books in English and didn't understand half of them (of the last two books).

Well, at that time I'm reading a book by Wolfgang Hohlbein. It' called Azrael. When I'm finished I will read Azrael - The Return. I don't think you know Hohlbein but he's a great author. His book Dark is also great. He's one of my most favorite authors! :)

Do you want to know something that is wierd.........Part of my duty at the Boys and Girls club is to Spend an hour every day reading to the kids......... well the director came up to me today and said she has a new book for me, called the song quest, Said she new it was the perfect book for me........... there is a girl on the cover of this book that could be my twin, seriously..... I mean her eyes are a different color but everything esle is the same.... same eye shape same face shape nose, ears it is really wierd. Like they took a picture of me and changed the eye color and stuck it on a book. I've started the book and though you can tell it was written for a younger audience in isn't half bad.  :D
