An origin story for the main setting I build in. There are aspects missing, and certain things need proper names. In addition, there are related topics I'll write about in other, related submissions, and the whole setting has a 'phase 2' (or sequel setting) in a hypothetical future where certain, massively world-changing events take place. I'll list related submissions at the bottom, as clickable links.
"Would you prefer I run my sword through your spine and leave you laying here for the wolves to gnaw upon or to just burn you alive with my magic? I would prefer to collect what I am after without the use of violence, but make no mistake I will kill you to remove this trinket from the hands of humanity."

The Totem of Nehual is something of a Maltese Falcon. Many have spent long periods of their life searching for it, spending vast sums of money, and in the end never finding it, or only finding it long enough to lose it.

Random passages coming from my less than daily attempts at writing exercises. In particular, some of them came about since I had come across what is known as the S+7 game where you replace all the nouns/adjectives/verbs with another word of the corresponding class that is the first one encountered counting 7 or more spaces in a dictionary. Mine this trove of trash or treasure of ideas at your pleasure.

This new version of Hunter is inspired by some insightful feedback by PoisonAlchemist. PA's comments highlighted issues with the internal consistency and motives of Hunter, and also some things in my head which never made it onto the page. After chatting with PoisonAlchemist and others, I decided to re-write this character as a new submission to allow a side by side comparison. Presented here is the new Hunter, co-written by PoisonAlchemist.
Chekov's Spell -- This spell has a two-fold effect. The first is to make the target item almost-unnoticeable to anyone not specifically looking for it. The second is that someone who has seen the item will remember it when they encounter a situation that would be perfectly solved by use of said item.
