Npc Generator Pirates    NPCs  (Extras)   (Mercantile)

Captain Aubrey surveyed the deck of the captured sloop. He was amazed that such well run ship could crewed by such a motley gang of men. He turned to the doctor and wondered, "No man is born into piracy. What were these many fellows before they took up the black flag? Surely they can not all share the same story."

The Other Side    Plots  (Divine/ Spirit)   (Defining)
Kovel the fighter sat at the bar table with his sorcerous companion, Errat, and and the roguish woman, Vena. Laughing, they raised their drinks to a succesful heist - they were all much richer after robbing and slaying the fat merchant earlier on the road and were celebrating a job well done. But deeds such as this attract the attention of many people.
Some hours into their night, a woman approached the friends with a friendly smile, "Greetings Kovel. Good eve, Vena and Errat. I wish to have a word with you. Yes, I know your names. We have been watching you for some time, and we like what we see. I am here to offer you a part in something great. And yes; there will be money. You will have power. Come with me; let us talk."

Snapdragon    NPCs  (Minor)   (Combative)

"Impatient as well as stupid, some virtuous whip you are." Snap tilts her head to the side with a smile as her drumming fingers increase in tempo. "I assure you that my patience is vast." The man stops in his tracks stare Snap down, her expression remains unchanged. "Vast, not infinite. I am but a human so I am sure something could cause me to break my vows." Hastily he resumes filling the order. As Snap walks out the door with the goods the shopkeep grabs your arm. "That is a monster chained by monks robes, I have stared down raging barbarians and never seen such hate in their eyes."

But they're only minions...    Articles  (Character)   (Game Mastering)

A quote from my solo campaign that really got me thinking about how players perceive Npcs.
Does your players treat your precious Npcs like nothing but obstacles, exploits and cannon fodder, whether they are gelatinous cubes or humans?

And if so, what can we do to change it?

The Dog Pit Public House    Locations  (Establishment)   (Any)

"Bristlebane ale. Tall."

Mathus looked up. He didn't recognize the man ordering, but he seemed the type: muscles beneath a layer of fat, a snarling expression with most of his teeth missing, fists like summer hams. "You want it in a bottle?"

"From the tap."

Mathus nodded. "This way," he said, stepping from behind the bar and into the back room, the "customer" following.

A fresh-faced young man sitting at the bar looked around, confused. "Bristlebane? Sounds adventurous."

"You couldn't handle it, son," an older man said from across the plank bar with a hint of derision. "It'd right kick your ass."

Vodai, the White Child    NPCs  (Major)   (Mystical)

There are some types of evil that are not easily recognizable as such. Much like the mountain-top ascetic or the cloistered saint, there is no obvious sign of the darkness that lurks inside Vodai.

Kalraka Dzeik – The Lightning's Will    Lifeforms  (Unique)   (Any)

Kalraka Dzeik is a sentient lightning storm with a following of cultists. It has much in common with a natural disaster or a plague; it starts at a single point but spreads like wildfire if given the chance. It is capable of terrible destruction, and will take heroic effort to stop, if it can be stopped at all.

The Sorcerer's Knot    Dungeons  (Any)   (Puzzles)

"We followed the map as best we could, periodically checking our bearings using the chronograph and the sextants that the seer had given us. Eventually we found the deserted location that corresponded to the coordinates on the rapidly disintegrating map. And we began digging...

"We started a trench that went down about fifteen feet into the baking sand and headed due South. After a few hours our spades rang with the sound of steel on stone and as it did so the group gathered round to see what we had hit. Some hand digging revealed a dark black stone that had been carved with a strange texture on it's surface like a series of overlapping layers of petrified tendrils frozen for perhaps a thousand years. It looked and felt utterly alien, and yet our goal lay in the centre of this forbidding artefact.

The Maritime Bank of Martinesse    Systems  (Mercantile)   (Historical)

Captain Blackthorn grimaced against the salt air that sandblasted his face. His men were weary, his ship was falling apart and the hold was replete with treasures beyond counting. It was time to head home and enjoy the bounty that years at sea had brought them. As he braced himself against the pressing squall he considered the conundrum of converting said bounty into a transferable asset that could easily be spent without arousing suspicion of the local militia or the jealousy of rival pirates. If only large amounts of wealth could be represented on something as light and unobtrusive as a piece of paper. But then Blackthorn had a idea:

"I know what we'll do! We'll bury it!…"
