Seeing your Elves in this way, they remind me strangely of the "first true" Elves from Tolkien. One could say they were actually drawn by the Sea (or something beyond it), as they felt the desire to depart. Perhaps that was the reason they were so strongly attached to their woods, to resist the lure a bit longer? Go to Comment

You're right- the dark elves have more potential than that. I like that they aren't a subrace, but are more like a cult.
I really, really like the Sea Elves. They are an awesome idea- I enjoy the emphasis on cleanliness and order, and also on body art (though I don't understand the impetus on that- maybe it helps them concentrate on their bodies rather than the Call?). A real serious twist would be good, though. Something really special to make them more than just really clean tattooed elf sailors. Go to Comment

A couple of questions
How long ago did this all happen? Are there any Elves left on the Land?
If kind of recently, we could have "haunted" elves moving in herds travelling from far away being drawn to the woods.
If sort of recently, there could be elves who are bound by geas or magics to protect something/ some one/ some place. They are torn by the magics of both calls. Thus they would be pitiful haunted elves.
Also, the Wood Elves are linked to the Earth... Do they get any advantage from being linked through their diety?
What do other dieties/ religions (and followers) think about all this?
Given his world set up, and the fact that this has been occuring for quite a long time, there are not any free Wood elves left. You wouldn't create a wood elf character because they would already be Borg.errrrr A Child of Gaia. These are definitely an NPC sort of character.
Sea Elves would be a playable race, but only for those who want very limited characters or very tragic characters. "Schmelll cared enough for his friends that he risked it all for them. He stepped foot on land. Running as fast as he can ran to their aid.

It's very interesting,the way Shawn twists the classic elf cliche.In most novels,the elves are distinguished by their love of nature and look down on greedy humans and dwarves for violating the mother earth.In Shawn's setting however,nature is an evil thing that enslaves the elves and the only way to save them would be to destroy the woods. Just an idea here, inspired by Ancient Gamers Prophecies of Redemption, what if there was another god opposed to Gaia, say a moderately evil one. This god might offer his aegis against the call of Gaia, say in exchange for services, or some other price that seems pretty good at the time. Given the choice between free will and Gaia-drones, most prices might seem pretty good. There could be elves clad in mail blessed by the priests of the god that protects the elves from the call, but so long as they adhere to the principles of the God, and do not remove the mail.
Some of these guys might go hunting their enslaved cousins to release their wretched souls, but perhaps something like the turning of the age is determined by a certain level of death among the elves. Willpower is the hard way out of the bargain, this would be the devils deal, or the easy way out. These elves could even delve into technology, severing their connection with nature completely, becoming cold and ruthless...
the idea is excellent, but you have heard that already... I intend to use it one day...
I wonder - can certain individuals from other races hear her call as well, but less often (perhaps after being introduced to the religion...) - say a halfling might stop growing crops and instead cultivate huge gardens, while a human might become obsessed with questing to nature's sacred places, an orc killing all who harm nature, or a dwarf forging metal trees and flowers...
This Gaia reminds me of the Wyld in Werewolf - the Apocalypse...somehow. While the werewolves are creatures of the Wyld, they must fight it lest they succumb to rage and lose all reason. They Wyld is a force of raw creation and chaos, and to embrace it means madness. Go to Comment

A thing I personally would alter though - the definitiveness of the transformation. If there was a chance, ever so slight, that a victim of Gaia could be brought back, it would give birth to a variety of story plots... and yes, elves trying to save their changed beloved ones being caught by the call themselves in turn.
btw., wouldn't an ideal dwarf be extra-good a chopping down trees? This might be an error of Gaia ... a dwarf, who, by chance becomes transformed, might become an even better builder and more ardent worker, restless and tough like nails, an unstoppable builder, destroying large areas of the forest "just trying to provide shelter and dams and bridges and corrals and gazebos and crop fields for my nature-loving brethren I love you all so much and now let me work dammit" just kidding Go to Comment
the reason for the art is easily understandable - by altering their bodies, they become less natural and thus less prone to the call. Because the call targets what Gaia sees an an elf, altering yourself might make the call 'miss' you somewhat. Also, piercing might help as well, because if you feel like succubing to the Siren, you might tug at the piercing as a last desperate move - the pain brings you back to reality. So, self-lashing might be a common method to clear one's mind too, as well as over-exertion.
As for emotion, I think having a strong focus might help the mind think of something other that Gaia's lullaby. But losing the focus suddenly, say, a beloved dying, might ease the descent into madness, though.
the locked rooms are a good idea - they might also use beings not susceptible to the call to keep them locked in - a trusted human, or a golem perhaps.
For homes, imagine cities on the backs of giant turtles or leviathans!
Or on fields of floating plants - like kelp, but far more dense.
As to make the plight more dramatic, they might have a greater task before them that fails if they all fail. For example, they are given the task of opening the Gate of Dusk on the eve of armageddon and lead the people to a new world so that life may continue, while the gods and demons battle it out in a deserted realm. Thus, they know that by failing, all will perish, not just them.
They might be the torch of civilization, and teachers of races, meant to travel and bring knowledge and reason to all, and thus letting the world to succumb to barbarism if they fail.
Or they may just knoow that the ultimate piece of art is meant to be created by a member of their race, and if they all embrace Gaia, their destiny will not be fulfilled. Perhaps, if their destiny does not come to term, they will not be able to reincarnate in the Next Age... Go to Comment
While setting up camp for the night, the PC's are aproached by another group of adventurers who seem nice enough. The road is somewhat dangerous and the other group suggests camping together. The two bands split watches, one adventurer from each group watching at once. The night goes by without incident, the next day the PC's travel with the other group as they are going the same way.
The group consists of Hordel the ranger, who is skilled with the bow. Hordel is a quiet man who speaks little but appears quite skilled. Dremar is a barbarian who is a little excentric, he seems to be an excasive drinker and thiunk that battle is the solution to everything. He appears to be a stout and powerful fighter with his greataxe. Ferrin is the leader of the group, a rouge by trade. He is daft and witty, speaking with the PCs often and asking many questions. He fights with finesse with his rapier. Preminitat as a cleric but he will not say which god he worships. He uses his spells to empower and heal his party and fights with a club. He sticks close to Ferrin. Ferrin is a great talker and tells much of himself and his party, but asks even more about the history and capabilities of the PCs. He tells of some adventures his party has had, and they seem like an interesting group of mercenaries. Hordel is quite and has little interest in speaking with the PCs, he ignores most questions. He spends a lot of time with Dremar and sometimes Ferrin. Dremar seems to not care about any questions ansked to him, nor does he seem to know the answers. He seems battle hardened and is a simple man. Preminitat rarely starts conversations but will speak with the PCs. However, some of his accounts of the party's history seem to condradict those of Ferrin.
The Party spends another night and day with Ferrin's group. One of four things can happen on the third night.
1: While eating dinner around the fire, Ferrin gets into an argument with one of the PCs when he/she mentions the discepincies between Ferrin's stories and Preminitat's.
2: Hordel gets mad after repeated questioning about his life from the PCs.
3. Preminitat gets mad after repeated questioning from the PCs about what god he worships.
4: One of the PCs rejects the offer of a drink from Dremar and he takes it as an insult.
All of these scenarios result in a battle between the parties. If Ferrin's party is defeated and still lives he swears vengance. His party may then cross paths with the adventurers again.
