I would give it another ability that can be seen as a benefit by my players. Perhaps something simple like making them seem more beautiful to others or something subtle that will make the character keep it and wear it as a trinket.
Then start on the character when he/she is alone and start having secret rendevous with the 'future spouse.' The ring is tricky and presses the secret aspect so the other characters may become suspicious and do what they do best. Ruin a good love life and save a friend.
Great subtle side theme that can mix it up a little and keep the players guessing. Go to Comment
Maybe the new spouse isn't an illusion at all, but possibly something much more sinister. It could turn creepy really fast if there was a succubus or two bound to the ring... Go to Comment
I think a perceived power that would make the wearer keep the ring on would be good food. Maybe while just wearing the ring, food tastes better, ale smoother, and so on and maybe even have some acutal healing effects, one or two hit points to go along with eating. Worse, the effect may be for everyone in the presense of the ring wearer.
Then, couple those effects with the delusions/ illusions. The new flame is quite a cook, making food that tastes like they had when they were kids, even occasionaly making thier favorites. These meals may make them feel better as well, but they are just another part of the illusion and the character isn't actually eating anything at all.
With everything tasting great and minor healing properties, the players will be hard pressed to notice anything amiss. Go to Comment
Not a bad idea, for a cruel trick to play. Of course, if you feel like being evil, it could be inflicted on an NPC, and the players could have to save the NPC... Plot hook there...
...Personally, I'd like to know where he got the ring, and how it was made. Go to Comment
This is a great idea - and can serve as a straightforward starting adventure.
The pcs need to save someone affected by this ring without hurting him, though he likely would have no such restriction. Go to Comment
I've always liked Golems and other animated artifacts. In Earthdawn, there are even wood, straw and wax Golems!
The Mini Adamantium Golem could be quite a troublesome amusment. Maybe it's mini in the sense of Mini Me from austin powers. Or even as small as a Ken doll. Regardless of size, an Adamantium Golem can pack a whollop! Of course, who says that raw physical power is it's real power. The evil guys might have trapped a soul inside it to make it alive, a thinking machine as the ultimate weapon.
It could be that it can only be deactivated by the one who activated it. Then they have to find the peasant who may or may not be being chased by the golem bent on freeing itself from it's master's controll. Go to Comment
