The Immortal Worms
Lifeforms  (Fauna)   (Underground)
valadaar's comment on 2015-08-31 10:09 AM

I envisioned their movement through solid materials as more supernatural than mechanical - they pass through the materials as if they were soft and pliable to them. As such, I didn't put much thought into their castings. The sub was inspired by a fishing trip with my son as I was baiting the hook.

As for immunity/resistance to poisons, I believed I covered that off with the passage:

"They are not indestructible, but are able to survive within the earth to the depths of several miles, subject to the immense pressures, temperatures and the toxicity of both air and stone"

So, metals, acids, CO, CO2, H2SO, etc, are all found in the depths, so all inorganic poisons and simple organic poisons would be protected

The title is a people's name for the things - they are effectively immortal. Another piece of somewhat dangerous, somewhat odd, magic to throw in one's world, not unlike the Voracious Slug.

I think a referral would be in order - given how critical his cover is for his work, he would never deal with his customers in person.

He likely could only work in larger cities, where the normal high rate of accidents would help cover his activities.

I like this one. And hate it, having done battle with some locally. Damn hornets. Damn ants. At least they are not fire ants. I digress. This is a good one!

Especially like the Superior version.

My thoughts are that the sling needs magical/fantastic seeds to really shine, but if you mean seeds instead of pages of a book, then yes.

I still like the thought of hitting an earth elemental and turning it into a chia pet :P

Its source material, not exposition. It can be dry and technical and detailed. In his comment above he never said this text would ever show up in the actual novel - its just stuff to keep his own head straight on his final product.

For that matter, the entire idea could end up on the cutting room floor, but that doesn't mean its useful for him to put here to fill out his universe.

An interesting start, and I love the name. I like the idea of the order mingling the mystical with the creative.

You are absolutely free to determine the likelihood of the success/fail critical result as you see fit. My intent was to provide the tool where massive campaign level events could be brought about.

As for its length, i have 40+ long subs in work which will likely not see light. This is not one of them. It was originally going to be a 100 but one thing led to another.... Go to Comment

I have a stillborn sub with a similar idea behind it - the Karth. One of a fleet of autonomous warships, the lone (cliche) survivor of the class. It has gone off to make a small empire for itself in a far flung corner of humanspace. Might revive it.

Bleak wood! Awesome stuff there.

I like the visual of this thing hanging in the sky among the stars.

I find it odd that the US would see the need to nuke Canada, as conventional forces would have a pretty easy time of it, and unless the nukes were tiny, they would be obliterating a good portion of their own population. Detroit, New York state, Oregon, etc. Most of our population is within 100 miles of the states and it would seem like using nukes in a civil war. That and I expect by the timeframe in question, a huge amount of the american water supply would come from Canada.

Great stuff! The old RPG Gamma world had a whole rule system for identifying the artifacts of the ancients and encouraged providing descriptions that did not immediately identify them.

This is a great way to add some anachronisms to your campaign that is highly controlled.

And as a Canadian, I think it would be unfair to guess on that item :P

A great first post - lots of detail, though nothing too groundbreaking. It seems to be a fine adaptation of the standard races for your campaign.
