Lifeforms  (Constructed)   (City/ Ruin)
Gossamer's comment on 2013-11-16 01:39 PM
Very professional as usual. I don't really like the name though, as something that would no doubt be said a lot during a campaign it doesn't really roll off the tongue, nor does it sound very roboty.

Also, the first image doesn't work. Go to Comment

I really like the plothook with elves using this in a millitary manner. Though I am curious as to how a plant would be able to hear sound, though I'm sure there's an example somewhere in wikipedia for that as well. Go to Comment
Ratwood Tree
Lifeforms  (Fauna)   (Forest/ Jungle)
Gossamer's comment on 2013-10-26 10:34 AM
Short but sweet. I was expecting a sort of weed, but not that the rat-fruits would act as real rats. But I suppose in terms of biology a plant that gets rid of its competitors and even eats them makes some sense. Is the seeds their primary source of nutrition? What happens when all the other trees and plant-life are gone?

This also seems like a total global plague able to swallow up entire ecosystems, especially since these rats are made of wood and could in theory float across oceans. Go to Comment

I couldn't find the passage SE mentioned, so I'm guessing you edited it since then. I don't know about rushed, it has plenty of content at least. I especially liked the rumours, very flavourful. You seem to have covered a lot of things, though no scenario in which Jacob Latris dies, I noticed. Go to Comment

A rather short one, not really sure what else to put in it. Suggestions welcome.

Well they're rather large for a pest so even though they would normally be encountered in packs, I would say each should be treated as an individual. But then again, you could have tiny swarm clouds of proto-lice accompanying the adults whom just end up being as potent as mosquitoes. That's actually something I overlooked, the various stages of growth. Will be adding that in later. Go to Comment

Good question! I suppose I figured it was enough just to make em squishy without any armor. While they're certainly ferocious, they aren't all that tough. But I didn't imagine them as delectable enough for any predator to wish to feed on them either... I suppose they are self-regulating, when a swarm grows large enough not to get enough prey to share, they start eating eachother. Besides even if spiders give birth to large broods, supposedly only a few of those survives. So their small brood probably falls prey to a lot of things, especially since the adults don't really register anything cold blooded, so ordinary fish could be eating their babies without them caring. Sure! They breathe air after all, a short excursion for some particularly hungry specimen could always be arranged. Go to Comment

Considering that they're self-regulating that's a bit harsh, they're a step above sharks when encountered in groups but other than that they're not meant to be a threat to the enviroment, for one thing fish could actually benefit from a colony of drowner lice as they would keep some of their natural predators away.

Maybe you want to read this part again:

"from whence hatches swarms of tiny proto-arachnids, most of which will never see adulthood, due to predation from cold blooded fish, other hungry lice and many other natural dangers present underwater. For every brooding, the female lays about 800 eggs. About 2 out of every 100 survives this stage into adolescense, and fewer still onwards to adulthood." Go to Comment
Oh Give Me Wings To Fly

I've had at least two flying dreams that I can remember, but in none of them did I ever need wings. I would never allow them for my campaign, except possibly in potion form.
For this to work in a campaign, it would probably be wise to introduce everyone in the party to some form of wings at the same time. Maybe in a floating world setting, they could start out with some simple wings with limited charges/range or something.

Isn't eagle a weird choice for fastest wings? I dunno if eagles are all that fast, Hawks on the other hand.

When I reached wings of the tinker, I had to doublecheck to see if your sub wasn't listed as silly. Pontoons and crossbows and rocket boosters, oh my! That's why I hate traditional gnomes. I'm imagining a godawful version of batman standing on pontoons.

You got some bad parsing in your first quote box.

It's a great sub, but these aren't dwarves. They could just as easily be replaced with human barbarians, there's nothing there to mark them as dwarves, though I liked the speckled beards.

But that part about lazy dwarfs being caught unprepared, that was darn well near blasphemy right there. :p But an interesting role-reversal though. Go to Comment

I wasn't referring to the lack of stereotypical dwarven traits, but rather the lack of values that I would dub as dwarven. It simply didn't feel dwarven to me. And I still stand by that if you take every instance of the word dwarf in this sub and replace it with the name of a barbarian tribe, noone would point to this and say, oh hey they seem like dwarfs. It's all fine and good to create your own version of something, but like I've said before, there comes a point where you simply have gone so far from the original that you might as well use something else instead. Instead of hammering in screws, use a screwdriver. Respectfully.

Boy, I really got you riled up huh. =)

PS. knowman, I've never played Dark Sun, so I wouldn't know.

Okay, starting with the bad. Sometimes the syntax in your sentences seem somewhat backwards or strange, and it can be distracting at times. For instance:

"The government saw instead of the improvements that the towns were causing but a threat to itself."

On the other hand, I see it as a bit synonymous with your personal style(perhaps it's even intentional), and I don't know if you're a native English speaker or not either. So I dunno, acquired taste maybe.

I liked the story with the bandit and the Carcer bit and how you combined the burning effigy with the inherent logic of your demons. So overall an interesting read. Go to Comment

Let's see if I get this straight, it's basicly a big invisible pocket dimension in the desert that is smaller on the inside, which would allow for faster travel? And if you exit this pocket dimension in the wrong place you are ejected somewhere either just outside this bubble/sphere or somewhere far away from it? Go to Comment

Theology 101

       By: rickster

A cult's theology is binding on the god involved: it is possible for that god to believe (and see, just like Winston Smith in 1984) that other gods are mythical, or jumped-up demons, or failing older spirits, even while those gods actually exist and thrive and act in the cosmos, even while working against him.
