The "spirit" of the item is to be a difficult to use magic item that has more flaws than benefits, so I wouldn't let players make it into something more useful. Besides, hacking holes into any magic item usually does not have good results... Go to Comment

It is silly, if a bit juvenile. Makes me wonder if they also have a mexican themed night with pink tacos. "The best place in town to eat out!" Maybe a honeymooners special platter for $69 so they can both eat out. Is the mascot a little man in a pink boat?

The Charlatan's Beard, certainly, and the Whiskers of Doom closely resemble a Fu Manchu, but the other ones are symbiotes and will be seen for what they are. Grey-green moustaches are uncommon, and other varieties may be any color. Go to Comment

I echo OmegaDraco's comments. Magic items that are not game breaking are ones I prefer, and the backstory presented does a great job of setting them up as having a reason for existing. Well done.

Great submission. Very evocotive descriptions of its creation and purpose, the dedication of the people's very being into it's existance. Only critique would be that is would be almost too powerful to put into the same scene as the players. If this was to fall into the plot the pc's were in, what purpose could it serve either for or against them?

I might not have made it clear how much of a mess it is inside. I wrote this on the verge of sleep, and after some more, may consider clarifying the dunes of loose papers and scrolls that cover the interior... A wizards study does not handle continuous jostling well. Go to Comment

Needs some more meat on the bones, but gave me the kick to post a new submission. Come on people, surely you can find some minor magic to add.

The Arbiter - Two-Bladed Sword
Items  (Melee Weapons)   (Sentient)
Agar's comment on 2011-08-26 02:36 PM

This is a well written sub. The item has a backstory and a purpose, a reason for being, and a very evocitive description so that you 'see' the weapon in use. Excellent writing all around!

I do hold one point with Cheka Man. As strolens is not a system specific website, we try to avoid stats when we can. If you want to provide them, I would recommend putting them in a reply to your own sub to help keep them seperate. Another personal point, this thing definately is an artifact level item, its valued at over half a milltion gold! Once cost get up that high, I usually dont attach price tags to them, that's a lot of gold!

FYI: I did indeed take a long break from Strolens at one point, so long I am reading my own subs and it seems a different voice wrote them than my own, however, it was not due to any voting and/or arguments. I started a family and was busy. Now I'm struggling to keep my house and busy, but strangely less busy than I was before. I may not pick back up my former level of activity, and am unsure of my voice, but I am back, and glad to be here.

Great submission. A simple sweet way to give depth to characters, just the right amount of depth. Not too much, not too little, and all with just a simple blurb. I plan on incorperating this into many of my own works. Great job!

It is railroady, and I apologise for that. Plots are not my forte, item creation is. That I'm even getting a passing 3/5 is already better than I'd hoped and better than I remember most of my plots doing. Thank you for your comments, hopefully I can work it into something better in the future.

Thank you.

I had considered some issues with the boy leaving, like being in debt for his fathers burial or other trumped up fees a corrupt wild west sorta town might drop on him, or being basically an indentured servant to the town store like debt bondage ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debt_bondage ) but didn't have it fleshed out enough to get it in there coherently.

I do like your ideas about figuring out other ways to discover Malenetti's treachery, and it would help the pacing of the adventure instead of being " Fetch the McGuffin! Fight! Fight! Twist! " , it could Fetch, fight, Conflict Resolution (maybe fight), twist. It's a good idea, and I will devote some thought to it. Go to Comment

I like the list. Along with nobody's comment, I could easily see a post for 30 torches, they are so ubiquitous and versatile. The shoes also strike me as being problematic though, as they either need to be a) used by specially trained personnel or b) magical.

The entry about the urn also set off a spark in my head for a creative and quick disguise, so good work on that one too.

Overall good work!

The Tower Shield
Items  (Armor)   (Magical)
Agar's comment on 2011-03-05 03:01 AM

Ah ha! Here's one that does something! It is indeed a variant of the old instant fortress, but I like it. Adventurers are always looking for ways to satisfy their needs, and the need for shelter is an important one.

Again there is a good backstory, although a magic user that can comfortably or effectively man a tower shield in an unusual one by most standards. This has a feel that the creator was kind of patched together to try to make the item make sense.

All good and no bad is a fine line to walk too, but really, it's a tower. There were no drawbacks to the original, and what are you going to do to make a drawback? This item is fine without any hindrances thrown in that don't make sense.

Good foundation piece. It has a good backstory, a reason for its creation, existance, and purpose. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with when you have the item actually do something. ;)

Agar's comment on 2010-04-25 10:04 PM
The sour fruit are analogs to Almond fruit, as I based the seeds off of almonds, which are technically peach seeds, not nuts, and high in phosphorus. Phosphorus was discovered in 1669 by a chemist working with urine, so I figured make a special mix with binary components, loosely based off of real stuff, and have fun burning stuff! Go to Comment

Learning how to post can be a learning experience here, but you've made some progress.

Some story, some reason this is different than normal burning flasks, would be a great place to start, and of course, stay away from stats or system references, which you have done well to avoid so far.

As the entry stands now, it is pretty much a description of your standard Molotov and some uses for them. The bit about lining the defenders battlements with them is almost an intro for some backstory, but as short and disjointed as it is, it just doesn't make sense yet.

I'll be looking forward to seeing how this develops. Go to Comment

In one region of a forest, all of the trees are identical, down to the leaves and the twigs. If the PCs carve something into one of the trees, it could mystically propigate until it covered all of the trees, or could vanish since it was not carved into the one true tree.
